Hi all,
After having a N-Gage for quite some time now, I have just got a brand new 6260. Now, when I put MP3's onto the phone using the PC suite or manually, unlike the N-Gage which has a dedicated MP3 Player software, you go through the gallery and SELECT the file, then it plays with built in MP3 software; in loudspeaker too.
However, when I go to select a ringtone, MP3's do not appear in the list. If it is playing through the same speaker it shouldn't be hard for the 6260. Firstly, I would like to know if this is an error with the phone or if the 6260 should play MP3's as ringtones, if not : what external sound formats will it play (also does it matter if the tone is on the phone/MMC memory?)
I think it might be important to point out that this phone goes into repair next week, when it came in the box the #, * and volume keys did not operate and it vibrated occassionally randomly.
All help appreciated!

Afaik the phone only supports midi, amr, awb and wav.
It's irrelevant where the tones are saved.
But sometimes people do have a problem with tone on the MMC because to phone accesses the MMC to slow when ringing and thinks it's not there and plays the default one instead. This happens to nearly all S60 phones.

Thanks for the help.
That still appears stupid, it's too easy to convert an MP3 to WAV using Audacity so I don't know why they couldn't include this feature.

It's more easy with the PC Suite.
You've got to activate the feature in the settings for it, so PC Suite will convert the mp3 into a wav-file.
The wav will be perfectly optimized for the phone (size & codec).

The PC suite for the 6260 is quite different from that of the N-Gage, it only has file transfer software and no audio/video conversion software I do not believe.
Anyway, I would like to prove you wrong! The phone will play MP3's as a ringtone (bit crackly in stereo) but the file needs to be placed on either phone or MMC memory in "Sound Clips\Tones" and it will work. Obviouly the phone only scans these locations for the files.

I asumed you put them in there. Thought it is a well known fact that ringtones have to be put in there.
I was a bit surprised on my research that nowhere mp3 ringtones were mentioned but the phone can play mp3s. But it was not a long research, only about 5 minutes

I totally forgotten that Nokia now includes the Symbian OS phone into their normal PC Suite. Somehow stupid.
Doesn't the Sound Convert do the job? Or does he only supports midi files?

Heh, sorry - the N-Gage didn't need you to move the MP3 files anywhere on the MMC so that's what I thought you had to do...

...what? They include the phone with the PC suite? Is there like a Symbian emulator in the PC Suite software now or something? There was no Sound Convert software with the PC Suite - is this another application you are talking about?
I just need to use Audacity to make my MP3's mono before putting them on. Sorry about my stupidity when it came to this - this is my first Symbian 7.0 phone after being on 6.1 for 2 years

What I meant is that the normal PC Suite works now with the new Symbian OS phone and that now special PC Suite is needed.
PC Suite should include the Sound Converter. I know from old versions it worked with midi files, maybe they included now something for realtone ringtones (amr or wav). But it's a big maybe!
Unfortunatly I hadn't the oportunity to use PC Suite for a while now and especially with a new Symbian OS phone.
Nokia should have kept the old PC Suite for Symbian OS phones, but improve it. It was quite good for the needs of a Symbian OS phone.

If you want to use them as a ring tone put them in digital sound folder then you can do them as a ring tone. You can do that through any pc suite
