I've been a regular cell phone user for over 9 years, which in cell phone history, is ancient. Yes, back in those days when the general public viewed cell phone owners as misfits and freaks who only used the cell phone to "order pizza" whilst driving their SUV.
Things have changed, and cell phones have changed.
Previously, you had a cell phone and you were lucky to have reception.
Now, you have a cell phone with a camera, movie files, downloadable ringtones and Lord knows what else.
So, I finally got my 4th new cell phone, an LG1150. I never thought that I would be the type to want to download ringtones, but, I found out that I am.
However, I've been severly disappointed in not only my LG1150's ability to download ringtones, but LG in general. More than 75% of the sites that I visit do NO download to LG phones...period!
To top that off, when I finally found some sites that would download, the ringtone that I receive is so faint, so pale in tone, that you CAN NOT HEAR IT unless you are alone, in a silent room, and the phone is in your hand.
The ringtones that the phone came with are LOUD and strong, but no matter what tone I download is pathetically inadequate.
Is this a problem with LG phones in general? How about LG1150's?
Do YOU have any problem dowloading tunes and having them be loud enough to hear?
I've only had the phone for 3 months but I'm already considering trading it in for a Nokia or Erickson phone which seems to be the phones of choice on download sites.

pscho: Thanks for the comment. Yah, I don't know many people who actually have an Erickson, it's just listed on so many sites for dowloads.

Great post and question...
Let me start with saying that different manufacturers use different formats for standard ringtones. Most phones now are MIDI compatible, so any MIDI tones will work. This does not mean you can just send a MIDI file to your phone and have it sound as loud as the 'real ringers' though.
If you are familiar with MIDI software, there are tons of ways to boost the MIDI track volume, but you need to remember to balance that as well. The good MIDI downloads will already be boosted, but if you just download a MIDI from a site like freemidis.com or something, it wouldn't be at the proper volume for a cell phone.
It's similar to the MP3 problems people are having with 'stereo' vs. 'mono' tracks. Your stereo MP3 file sounds awesome on your PC, but then you transfer it to your phone in mono and it's really soft. The MP3's need to be boosted in mono - AFTER - you convert them.
The MIDI's are the same way. Download the MIDI file, clip it to 30 seconds - since your phone won't ring longer than that anyways - then boost the overall track level. 127 is the maximum MIDI level. If you can't hear it well enough at the max level, then simply 'double' the track and you will have a much higher volume. Also, make sure there is no panning in the MIDI files as that will disappear with a phone since it only has one speaker.
This was probably way more info than you wanted, but I just wanted to let you know that it's possible to have a high quality ringer file without having to change phones. You will also notice that the Mmode ringers are all balanced already and will sound great on any phone as well.
Good Luck!

acarmanron: Wonderful, wonderful reply to my post!
No, it wasn't "too much information", I'm just not this technically advanced, yet. However, all of my friends are, so I can email them your reply and they can explain it to me.
I'm a landscape architect so my phone is ringing under outside/noisy situations. Although I HATE all the ringtones that came with my phone, at least they are LOUD!!!, and obnoxious so I can hear them under the worst circumstance.
I was always mystified when I'd be someplace and hear someone else's phone 'ring' with some funky, current tune that sounded more like the radio than a ringtone. Apparently, they are doing what you suggested and that's the difference.
Thanks for taking the time to repy and also doing so in such a fine fashion. I appreciate it!

Cool idea; I never explored the options for the Voice Notes but it sounds like something I'd like to play around with.
You've got an LG 1150 and you DON'T like it? Why?
