I just purchased MPx220 (Cingular) from Amazon.com. Some customers there wrote that the phone comes unlocked, but I am not sure anymore. I stuck my AT&T SIM card in the phone and the screen says:
Network PUK
This phone only accepts SIMs from specific networks and has been blocked. Contact your customer service center for the unblock code.
Then there is a space for:
Unblock code:
New PIN:
Confirm New PIN:
I called the customer service, spent several hours with AT&T, Cingular, both and back again... you all can imagine the story... the final words after trying different PUK codes, was that I need a new, Cingular SIM card and change plans... which I just don't want to do... I have this excellent all-you-can eat plan with AT&T, for another 1.5 year.
Does anybody know how I can solve this PUK code mystery? Does it mean the phone is locked and I need the subsidy code there? All advice appreciated, or I will need to return the phone, but I just love that toy.
Thanks,
Suzanna

Well the MPx220 is with Cingular only of course, I believe it is also compatible with AT&T. I know the New Cingular plans use a 64K technology sim card, while the older at&t/cingular plans used 32k. A PUK code is just when you are trying to unlock the phone, and after 3 invalid attemps it locks the sim card. If after 10 INVALID PUK attemps the sim card will be trashed and you'll have to purchase another one. Getting it from cingular you cant because you have no account on that side. You'll probably have it get it unlocked with a subsidy code you have to search online for and try to unlock it that way. If AT&T'S PUK code wont work thats the only way to go. Also how many invalid PUK attemps did you try already?

So you mean that if I possibly have the old AT&T 32K SIM card, that it wouldn't work with the new (64K) Cingular's MPx220?
I just purchased the subsidy code, and trying to unlock the phone and it just doesn't go... it asks me for the "Unblock code" (on the screen called Network PUK), and new PIN... if I put in the subsidy code, then I get the message "The action you are attempting is not supported by this SIM"
I even tried to enter all 00000000 and new PIN 1234 (should be default) and reset the phone, and then enter the subsidy code, but it didn't work either... I am not sure how many tries I've had now, so I don't want to play with it anymore. Unless I know for sure what I am doing.
Any thoughts?

I just bought the MPX 220 thru AT&T and I want to get it unlcoked to use it on t-mobile. I currently have ATT service and t-mobile service. Where did you get your unlocked codes? How much did you pay for it?

I went through -edited-
The cost was just under $45. I chose them because the web site stated that the code would arrive within 24 hours, which was excellent compaired to all other web site: 2-5 working days. As it showed, the Motorola unlocking server was extremely busy, and my code arrived within a week (5 working days), and gsmliberty.com updated this information on the web site later on. They were nice, they offered me a refund if I wanted, because they didn't keep the promised time... So be prepared to wait quiet a long to recieve your code.

I did not... I was not able to unlock the MPx220. Was emailing back and forth with two support people, doing exact what they recommended. I got even a new SIM card it in, and it was still the same problem, and the unlock code didn't solve it. So I sent the MPx220 back to Amazon.com, and bought another Nokia 6590 on EBay.

I am asuming that you have an ATT logo on your simcard...if so follow the below instructions...
to obtain a PUK code you must call customer care at 866 293 4634 from a landline phone with the phone in hand tell the rep that it says enter PUK code on your screen an you need the override
if you have attempted more than 10 invalid codes you will need to get a new sim card from them...the cost for the sim is 25 bux...
the way to tell is if it says enter PUK on the screen you can still use that sim... if it says sim blocked you have to get a new one....
if you sim has a cingular logo on it... call 800 331 0500 and repeat the same to the rep

Does anyone have experience with calling Cingular for the unlock code? I just called Cingular today (I'm an AT&T customer) and reached a fairly knowledgable CSR. He noticed I wasn't in the Cingular database and asked if I was an AT&T customer. I told him I was, and then he suggested I call them for support issues. I then told him that I think I needed to talk to someone at Cingular because I had a Cingular MPx220 and I wanted the unlock code so I could use it on the AT&T network (I also told him I travel extensively). He then proceeded to ask me questions like - what the IMEI # of the phone was, my phone contact info., and where I got the phone. I told him the phone was given to me as gift (and it was).
He seemed fairly honest and said he submitted the request to the unlocking group and that it usually takes 2~5 days to get response back. He said he would call me back when he had the unlock code. Is this usual?
He gave me no indication he was doing anything other than submitting a request for the code, but after thinking about it, he may have been asking me those questions to look up and see if it was a stolen phone. I mean, he didn't tell me they had a policy against giving out the codes or anything and didn't really put up any resistance to my request for the code.
Well, I'm hoping he is just getting the code, but if anyone else has experience with this sort of call to Cingular, I sure would like to hear what you think and how your call/request went.
