What is this cingular extended I have seen on some of these threads? Does this mean if you do not have cingular service you can use someone elses towers? I was told at my cingular store there was no other networks that could be used, and when I am out of service, thats exactly it. I have no way of using another service. Service is very spotty in my area so I would like to have an extended service if this is possible. thanks

In the past, if your phone said "Cingular Extend" it meant you were roaming on another carrier's network - ATTWS or T-Mobile depending who Cingular had a roaming agreement with in the area. Where are you located? If you have a national plan, your phone should automatically switch to whatever network is available. Not sure if this happens now after the meger or not.

I am new to cingular, I have never had a cingular extend on my screen. I am located on the edge of the appalachain mtns in NC, the service rep said cingular had no partnerships for me to use if I have no service. If I can use this ability, it isnt happening on its own, is there anything I can do?

The switching to alternate GSM networks should be automatic, but if there's no other network available, then there is nothing you can do.

i have found that when i get cingular extend on my phone, its ususally when i am somewhere outside of my 'home' area, even if it i'm still be on the cingular network.
i have a national plan, and i live in upstate NY; but when i went to Myrtle Beach, NC (which i know is cingular bc t-mobile doesnt have their own towers there and they use the cingular network) it said cingular extend.

another thing you might run into is shen i go from NC to DC i get the "cingular extended" thing too. i found out the hard way that you cannot use the (press and hold) the 1 button short cut to get to voicemail, you actually have to call you own phone# and retrieve the long way.

I found this thread by searching on google, hope you don't mind me posting.
I've been a Cingular customer for over 2 years, still using my old Samsung N625 phone. I've been all over Southern California, and to Las Vegas, and my phone ALWAYS reads "Cingular Extend". It never just reads "Cingular". Is there something wrong with my phone? I inquired about this when I first got my phone 2 years ago and they said "it's because you're on the National Plan".
Can anyone clear this up? Also whenever I try to use WAP on my phone I get the error message "Network Not Responding. I was hoping to configure my CSD/GPRS settings but don't see any option to do so.
