I've followed several different sets of instructions on how to put MP3 ringtones on my Motorola v551, but I get the same malfunction every time. Here's the scenario:

Software:
P2KMan
MP3 Editing software
Hardware:
USB Cable
Motorola v551

I take an MP3 file, take the 20 seconds worth of it that I want, create a new mp3 meeting the "criteria" that was told to me by the motorola "tech support" (this term is thrown around loosely). This criteria is allegedly as follows:

Bitrate: 65kbps max (thought it would be 64kbps, I haven't heard of 65)
Duration: 16-30 Seconds max
Reccomended Size: 100k

Next, I run P2KMan, and transfer the mp3 file from my pc to the audio "folder?" on my phone. This goes off without a hitch. However, once the mp3 is on my phone, this is where it gets confusing. It does not appear under my ringtones, but it does appear under myMEdia->sounds I can even listen to the mp3. I hit menu->set as ringtone. Then my phone pretends to apply the MP3 to "Calls".

I go into the details of my style to attempt to set the volume, or even see what it looks like in that menu, but when I go menu -> settings -> audio -> "Style" Details and then my phone goes right back to the settings menu.

After this, my phone doesn't make a single noise when someone calls, let alone play my mp3, and if I want to be able to access my details, I have to go to myMEdia->sounds to set a working file as my ringtone.

Any help on correcting this problem will be greatly appreciated. I hope I have been descriptive enough, and not too wordy.

It never fails. I struggle with something for a long time, and when I finally give in, hang my head, and ask for help, I figure it out myself. I don't know if this is the case for everyone, but on my v551, I can't transfer MP3s using P2KMan, and keep full functionality (refer to above post for details).

THE SOLUTION (for me anyway)
Use Mobile Phone Tools. I tried using P2KMan six different ways till sunday, and I got the same problems everytime. However, one shot one kill using MPT. I transferred the same MP3 I tried to transfer with P2K, and when I went to my phone, it was in my ring tones.

So, as far as I'm concerned, if you're using a v551, MPT is the way to transfer MP3s to you're Phone. I found it to be faster, and a more attractive interface. As far as the criteria is concerned, I was a little less conservative on my next ring tone and used these criteria:

Dual-Channel MP3
44100 Hz
128 KbPS
434 Kb
27 sec

I don't think you don't really need the quality this high, but you can do it. I don't know from experience, but logic tells me that you're ring tone can't be longer than 30 seconds, because that is the max time you can set your voicemail to pick up at. Maybe it can, but I don't think you can hear the whole thing. I hope this helps someone else, it sure would have helped me earlier this afternoon.

I get a message that says "MP3 codec not found" when I used Motorola Phone Tools. Do you have any idea how I can resolve this? I haven't been able to load one single MP3 on my phone, but have been able to load something with the extension .amr (I don't even know what that means!). Any help would be appreciated.

Which is "better" with the 551 and MPT - usb cable or usb bluetooth adapter for using MPT and doing the MP3 transfers?

USB data cable will go along way with all model. BT is very limited to what it can do

Thanks for the advice. I have ordered a MPT 3.0 and USB cable on ebay for $17. I may need to return here once I get it and try to use it icon_cool.gif . I have been told that one can do things like delete the stock video, pics and ring tones that are not used, boost up the volume for the speaker phone, and so on. It is not clear if one can do that with MPT or if other software needs to be installed.

I use the Susteen DataPilot software/cable to interface with our V551 phones.

This software was preferred because it allowed choices of PIM sourcing (I use Outlook, wife uses Palm Desktop). I also found the DP software very straight forward to install and get working (beyond the series of updates that had to be applied...)

I've used the software to transfer MP3 ringtone files having lengths > 30 secs and sizes of over 400kbytes. Though possibly not as fancy a GUI as MPT, it's got most of the same feature set from what I can tell and less expensive by far.

Also, I received an email response from their support department within 15 minutes of submission. The information answered my question and resolved the problem... not often you get that on the first go round...

I found a zip with the P2Kman drivers, but have not found PST. Do you know where I can get PST?

Thanks.
