Hi
I was going to buy an mp3 player but could do with a new phone so I thought I'd look at an mp3 capable phone. The mp3 playback is really important so I'd be grateful if someone could answer my questions:
1) Does it playback in stereo via plug in earphones. I have heard some of the Nokia phones will only play in mono
2) Can it play variable bitrate mp3s ok?
3) All my albums have a folder and a corresponding m3u playlist file. Could I just copy the folders across to the MMC and the phone will recognise the m3u file, or is there a certain way you have to copy the files to the MMC and create a playlist from the phone in order to play an album?
Any other phone suggestions for mp3 playback would be good
Thanks
Guy

1) It is stereo. The 6230 is designed as portable mp3-player.
The Sony Ericsson P800 is a great mp3 phone.
It has the loudest mp3 playback I know.

As far as I know m3u playlist files are not recognised. Mp3s are supported in most if not all bitrates and play in stereo through the supplied hands free ear plugs. The music player will only recognise the songs in the MMC's root directory, any songs in folders will be ignored. You will be able to play the songs in folders singly by selecting them using the phones Gallery browser, but you will only get 1 song at a time played. The Music player will play through the list start to finish, repeat whole list, repeat 1 song or random play.

Yes and no.
If you put the mp3s on the phone with the Audio manager of Nokia PC Suite you can define playlists which allow you to put the mp3s in folders.
How exactly, I don't know.

I just tried it and it worked. - The audio manager creates a hidden folder in the phone memory called "playlist". This folder is visible in the audio manager's browser but not visible on the phone. I guess whatever file contained in this folder points the music player to the various locations of all song files stored on the phone / memory card.- Thanks Bjoern

I have a problem with my 6230's music player. i transfered my mp3s to my phone's mmc card and i defined play lists using nokia pc suite. but after doing so, i always get the error: "invalid track list" . i already refreshed the track list a number of times but it still says the same thing. How do i fix this?

Firmware 5.24 and above recogniize songs stored in sub folders on an MMC, even 1GB. However, they are plaied in the order they are saved on the MMC, not in order of the file name (01-songtitle.mp3) or even id3 tag. So the only way of organizing your music is by using playlists.
If you are not a windows user an therefore can not use the nokia audio suite, or if you have a firmware older than 5.24, the following may help you:
Playlists can easily be created on your computer using any playlist creator or manually.
The format of .m3u files (mp3 playlists) is simple
first line: #EXTM3U
following lines: names of files with sub folders.
The MMC is recognised by the cell phone as drive B, so the file names must be:
B:\subfolder1\file1.mp3
B:\subfolder1\file2.mp3
etc.
You can then copy the playlist onto your phone using the program Gammu: www.mwiacek.com/gsm/soft/gammu.html. Download Version 1.00.10 or above (the files are currently in the developing folder, not yet in the stable folder).
An explanation on how to copy the playlists onto the phone can be found in this thread:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.gammu/2121
Enjoy your Nokia 6230 as a fully functional mp3 player!

I just got the 6230 last week and I am impressed!!
I downloaded gammu and tried to connect to phone from linux PC through bluetooth dongle but had problems.With a search of the net, I finally got it working.
If anybody has similar problems you have to subtitute the line
port=xxxx
in the .gammarc file with
device=(IP address of connection)
ie device=10:AA:55:44:AA
I got this from the KDE bluetooth icon in the system tray.
