icon_huh.gif Is it possible to use an Ericsson sim card in a Motorola phone? Are they all different? Providing I stay with Cingular as my provider. May be a silly question icon_blink.gif just curious....

How do sim cards work anyway?

thanks!

it's probably not an Ericsson sim card but a Cingular SIM card, your carrier provides the SIM to you, not the phone manufacturer. so yes, you should be able to put your SIM card in a Motorola phone.

a SIM card stores all your subscriber info such as what network you belong on, your phone number, contacts if you store them on it, voicemail number, and more. JC will prolly add some more later icon_smile.gif Rather than having your subscriber info tied to your phone, it its tied to the card so you can switch phone easier

Dogg said it as well as I could. Its the authentication method for telling the network who you are. When you turn on the phone, the phone reads the SIM card, and transmits with the network - I have SIM card number NNNNNNNNNN from provider YYYYYYY - will you let me connect to your network?

The network checks its database to see if you're authorized to use it, and either allows you to connect, or gives you "Emergency Only" service.

I'm sure there's much more science to it than I just detailed, but you get the idea - its the key that allows you to use a network. They also have memory in them which is useful for storing phone numbers, voicemail box, the order in which your phone should search for available network providers, etc.

My phone was hit by a car yesterday and i attempted to transfer my sim card from my old phone to another one (both cingular) however it didnt transfer my contacts! my text messages were transferred though so i dont know if i possibly did something wrong. also i didnt know my password yesterday on the online cingular site so it "temporarily locked my phone" so that may have something to do with it..but im completely unsure!! icon_confused.gif Please help!!

When you store contacts, there is an option to store them to the phone, which is usually automatic, or store them to the SIM. On my phone, there is an option to copy one to the other, but then you end up with two listings for each contact when you open your address book. I would say that unless you specifically saved each contact to your SIM, they were saved to the phone's memory and you will not be able to get them back since your phone has been heavily damaged.

For future reference, it's always a good idea to store your contacts to your SIM. Only if you want to add a voice dial or specific ringtone to a contact should you copy that contact and save the info to your phone. That way, if something like this should happen, you will have all of your contacts saved to your SIM.
