Signed up for international calling for an upcoming trip to Mexico. Don't understand the use of the plus sign.
1. Do you precede the phone number with the + when calling from Mexico to the states?
2. Do you precede the phone number with the + when calling within Mexico?
3. Do you precede the phone number with the + when adding contacts to your phonebook that you intend to call while on vacation? In other words, can I use my existing phonebook entries while there?
Thanks

The plus comes at the beginning of the country code that you have to enter before a number before dialling internationally. Say now you are in the states and you want to phone someone in Mexico. How will the network know which country that number is destined to? Thereofore a country code is added before dialling overseas. If you wanted to dial England and the person's number is "07389896254" for example, you will need to remove the "0" before the number and replace it with the country code "+44". You will then ne directed to the right number in the right country. Search the net for a list of country codes.
P.S. You will need to edit your phonebook to include the country code in the numbers.

That may be a burden for him if he has to change his current contacts to dial internationally.

Well, he will have to if he wants to call them from Mexico or wherever his destination/s is. Only the contacts he intends to call. The more you call, the more changing you'll have to do.

P.S. When calling within Mexico, I don't THINK you will have to enter the country code if you have International Roaming on, which you do have activated from what it sounds.

did you check to see if your fone is unlock ?, cause if it is you can buy prepaid simcard to in Mexico when you get there (local simcard) and not have to pay an arm and a leg for international call

Thanks everyone, great info. I will add the few stateside contacts I plan to call from Mexico to my phonebook adding the plus. An example will be +001573nnnnnnn. That is: + followed by 001, country code for the USA, followed by the area code then the 7 digit contact.
When calling from Mexico to contacts also in Mexico like divemasters I will try it by using the local 7 digit phonenumber.
This board is great. Motorola customer service told me to use the + when calling internationally but couldn't answer specific questions. Cingular customer service set me up with international roaming but said NOT to use the + sign but couldn't explain why when I explained my phone manual say to use it. The conflict was cleared up here by this board. Thanks again.
