what about my retarded v3? it does that thing thats happening to a few people too - it only charges for about 2 or 3 hours and displays "charge completed" but the phone runs out of battery really fast. so once it dies (speeding up the process by turning on BT, and playing slideshow) i charge it again, and it says its full in about an hour or so. so then i go out, and i talk on the phone for about 5 minutes max and dies. so i try to turn it on again, then dies. so i leave it for about an hour turned off, until i really needed my phone so i try to turn it on again and voila the battery is full again! (or so the phone says). another phone call later (lasting about 2 minutes) its still full. then a few hours later after about 20 txt messages it dies again. so i leave it dead until i got home and charged it. an it was full in about 2 hours again.
my phones 1 and half years old. i got it in april last year and i only started having this problem probably about 4 months ago.
help?
thanks!

Try completely discharging the battery and then recharging overnight. I know these batteries aren't supposed to have memory, but this seems to have helped my problem. First leave the phone on until the battery runs so low that it shuts off. Then with the phone off recharge overnight. I did this two days in a row and the problem seems much better.

i have been doing that. what i said above was just a one off time (i really needed my phone working that day so i charged it even when it wasnt completely dead). i always only charge it when the battery dies out on its own. doesnt help in my case.

I plug mine in every night, dead or not, and it works fine, so memory is non existant, however Li-Ions do wear out thats why ipod has such an extensive page about it, the more times the battery is charged, the faster it dies, I suggest just buying a new battery fo your v3

Take a look at http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
Follow this procedure:
Run phone till battery is flat
Remove battery for a few mins
Replace battery but do not turn phone on
Charge phone overnight while turned off
To improve life set network speed to slow. Minimise use of bluetooth, java apps, camera etc

I am experiencing the exact same problem as others with my V3 battery. The problem just started in the past couple of weeks and I have had my phone for over a year. I can only talk for about 10 minutes on a full charge. I went as far as buying a brand new Motorola battery as I thought it may be the battery, but I still have the exact same problem. In fact, the batter came to me fully charged, and that charge only lasted for 10 minutes.
It's not the network settings as I have not touched them or used my phone any differently than before, and I had no battery issues for over a year. And I haven't changed my bluetooth or email usage either.
Something is screwy with this phone and I'm a little pissed as Cingular won't replace it as I'm out of the year warranty period. Anyone gotten a root cause on this yet?

I was able to talk Cingular into replacing my phone which was 6 months out of warantee. Unfortunately, the new phone doesn't work any better that the old one. I also bought a second battery with the same results you have. I have since downloaded a bunch of software that allows me to change the settings that Cingular had locked. While this was fun it did no make much difference in my battery life. I must use BlueTooth all day long and that runs the battery down. The only thing that seemed to make a real difference was "reconditioning" the battery by running the phone until it died and then recharging over night as described in a previous message. Running my phone until it dies is actually not that simple. It begins telling me I have a low battery at least an hour before I can make it shut off for lack of power.

battery doesn't seem to be fully charged or doesn't hold a charge. The phone is charged each day at about 9 or 10 pm and then used begining at about 6am. By 9 am the phone shows three bars instead of four. Verizon service personnel told me that I over charged the phone, thereby damaging the battery. However, the same person tells me that the "smart charger" automatically stops charging when it's complete. He goes on to tell me that I should only charge the phone for 4 hours. Can I really be at fault, if it is indeed a "smart charger." And if one is traveling frequently, how does one fine four hours to charge the phone. What am I missing here?
Phone is only used for calls and voicemail, limited text messaging, no games, and no online use.
What's going on? Anybody else getting the same explanation?

I have sprint and a motorola slvr, so this may or may not work for others but:
I was having the exact same battery draining problems with two different slvr phones, and finally the people at sprint suggested I reset my phone. You do it through settings, security, reset phone on my phone (you may need to ask how to do it on your phone), but to my utter shock, it completely solved the problem. It is not the battery, it's not because you over-charged it - it's a software issue.
One thing to note is that I had to re-connect my service after resetting, so don't do it unless you can deal with being without service for a few hours.
