Also we send updates to you phone every evening if you are dropping calls alot or if the signal is at four bars on moment and at no bars the next try to turn off the phone and wait a minute before you power back on. This will keep you current on the network, and I am not saying you will stop dropping calls but you will not experiance this as much as you had prev encountered

In buildings sometimes I get no reception at all, and it is rather annoying, since I really like all the features of the phone. Anybody have any suggestions on how I could improve the reception? Would it help to maybe bring it to some cingular service store and have them look at it? Thanks for the help! |
README!
Here is the scoop. I bought TWO v551s at the same time. Wife dropped hers in the toliet. (still AOK). After a good dry out it still worked like a charm. (Or should I say Sharmen)
My cell phone after about thee weeks the reception on the phone fell to half. Held one next to the other and my phone was at half and dropped calls all the time.
Called the 800 number and had it replaced.
Then the new one came in and it worked great (like my wife’s - the smell) for again a few weeks then the screen started to strobe like a strobe light. Only way to clear it was to reboot the phone. So I thought well it may be a fluke so then a few days later it happened again. So I called they did something at their end. Then a day or two later this new replaced phone went to half the reception. (Again comparing it to my wife's phone (v551 - now out of warrantee). So I called they sent out another replacement phone. Well I now am using that phone and it is working just fine. (For now) and now my wife's phone just dropped to half the reception. So I don't know I am thinking there is a MAJOR problem with their phones the v551 that is. But I have not a clue how to fix it. Thinking to see how they function after putting them both in the microwave oven for a few minutes...
Any tips or ideas would be great robert at feldhousen.com .
Take care.

all GSM motorola phones have possible faulty software that will cause excessive dropped calls. motorola is working on this, the way to figue out if it is this, is to travel, or the phone needs to be power cycled at least every 3.3 days.
or if your software version is anything lower than this...R472_G_08.18.16R_0A

Thanks for that tip but my version is
R472_G_08_.18.16R_0A
also I pulled to battery and the smart chip overnight put it all back together again and no fix to the problem.

I had a lot of the same problems.
Mine also consistently detaches from the network. I'll still have EDGE or GPRS, but not the voice network.
I had the phone replaced 4 times for various reasons and none helped. My wife's V220 did a lot better.
Haven't had any problems with the refurbed Nokia I bought as a GoPhone. Now waiting for the 3G phones to renew my contract.
I think this phone was just a lemon model overall. I'll stay away from Motorola for the time being.

The moto V551 is the equivalent of Microsoft "Millenium" edition.....
We've had no less than 4 of them in our household, over the last
10 months.....and reception has been horrible. Dropped calls, little
to no service.....bars moving around like a bucking bronco. The kids
have no problem using their free LG's and Samsungs (not knocking either).

I have my Cingular account on the basis of a "foundation" business contract with my employer. I am now on my third Motorola V551 due to reception problems...either absolute or relative. Cingular does a free phone upgrade on your third trade, so I am now getting a free upgrade to a Motorola RazR V3 (silver or black depending on what's at the warehouse). I hope the reception is better (by reputation it seems to be). I would respectfully suggest that the only definitive solution to the reception problems on the Motorola V551 is to replace it with another model while it is still under warranty.

Dang, I didn't know they'd give you an upgrade after the third one. I went thru five!
Lemon law for phones perhaps?

I used to have the V551 for about six months before I got the Razr and it worked like a dream with reception and quality. I only had a few dropped calls, but that was when it to be needed power cycled. My wife has my old V551 and it works perfect for her. Maybe I got lucky and got a good working model.
