actually i just learned today that the front cover slides off... you can just slide it off away from the hinge and it may be hard the first time but after you do it once its not bad

I've heard other people that have claimed to have contacted SE and they were told that the whole "read messages on the external display" thing was a misprint in the manual that would be cleared up in future printings. I tend to believe this more than anything else as I haven't seen any consistancies between not being able to read the messages on the ext. display, having blue screen problems, and the date code on the back. Additionally, keep in mind that this manual also claims that the phone is capable of saving still pictures at a resolution of 1280 x 960 which it is not.
I'd like to know what the firmware versions are of anyone having the blue screen problems and of anyone claiming to be able to read the text messages on the external display.
For reference, I have not had any blue screen problems but I also cannot read the contents of text messages on my external display. My firmware version is R2A011 which, from everything I've seen, is the latest version out there. The only other version I've seen someone report they actually have is R2A009.
If you don't know how to check your firmware version, from the main screen press these keys and a support menu will pop up: RIGHT * LEFT LEFT * LEFT *
At that menu, choose Service Info then choose Software Info and the first line will be the firmware version.

Just to note, there are two firmware versions out, however I think they are provider dependent. I read quite a few times that Cingular used one firmware and Fido or something else had the other. The problem still lies with both firmware versions, so it's not like you can switch to the other and have an instant fix.
Like most phones nowadays, there are some lemons in the basket, and I believe all of the bluescreen phones are just that, lemons... accidents, etc.
It's true. You won't be able to read text messages on the outside, it is a misprint.
The bluescreen issue is just as I stated before, a lemon. However, I've only had the bluescreen happen to me once... and I had my phone on charge all night, opened it up in the morning and all I saw was blue. I took battery out put it back in and I couldn't grasp the Cingular towers. It said insert sim card. Turns out I had a Cingular-Lemon-Sim-Card. The sim card was bad, so Cingular replaced it for free. No problems since, even though that was a one time occurance.
I've never had any other bluescreen issues. From what I understand a firmware upgrade will fix it but due to the fact that this phone is relatively new it's still in the beginning process. When was this phone even released, like, 2 months ago?
Also - To the person who was unable to take the front faceplate off. The front faceplate to take off for the first time is a bear. You feel like you're about to break the phone, but don't worry it's okay. Look inside your manual, there are pictures and instructions of what you should do. Follow those pictures EXACTLY and you'll have no problems... don't worry.
Regardless of the blue screen (even if I had it happen to me quite often) this is still a damn good phone. For the price and the features, you can't beat it. I've paid much more for certain phones that provided nothing BUT problems and had less features. I'm stickin with my Z500a for the next 2 good years or so.

I have the same lint problem. Seems like the top cover can be opened but I didn't want to take chances myself. I am trying to go to a Cingular store and have them clean it for me (I am not sure if they will do though!).
Anybody did it already?

I had a similar problem with my new z500a...after 8 days there was a considerable amount of dust under the faceplate. I tried many times to get the cover off with no luck. You could even see little dents in the top of the face plate where I tried to push with my fingernails. On my way home from work I stopped at a FIDO store and asked a girl working there, about it. She tried for about 15 minutes to get the faceplate off. She told me likely the dust under the cover had somehow jammed the cover. So, I can't get the cover off because of all the dust, but I can't get rid of the dust because I can't get the cover off. I then took the phone to the Best Buy where I bought it, and they did a straight exchange. I asked the fellow in the store to try and take the cover off the new phone...he couldn't (but then, he had a difficult time getting the sim card out of my first phone). I left the store with the new phone and I after a bit more trying I was able to get the cover off, now it's a snap.

Easy trick for first time removal. Take a flat head screw driver or like me a butter knife and place it betweent the phone hinge and the cover to be removed. just use it as a pry bar and it will come off fine.
Also, I know the radiowave (radiation) filters are really a scam, but they do help keep the lint out if you place it over the ear speaker inside the phone. that is where all the dust gets in.
Hope that helps

Hey, I'm having troubles with my Z500a (how surprising!)
Anyway, it's telling me to insert my SIM card whenever I turn it on. As far as I know, the SIM card is already in there, but I can't figure out how to take it out. I've looked in the handbook for removal, but no luck.
Can anybody out there help me?

Maybe Its Put In Backwards?
To Take It Out Just Look At The Sim Card Slot, At One Of The Corners There Should Be A Hole (Not Really Sure What Its Called) If Your SIM Card Is In There Then Just Use Your FingerNail To Push It Out - The Whole Thing Should Slide Out.
