is it because the dimensions are too large and is there a way to correct this?

The dimension of the videos should be 176*144 to play correctly. Higher resolutions can cause problems or won't be played at all.
Also the used codec is important.
It should be the Real Media 8 codec.
Re-encoding a rm-file, I don't know, but afaik it isn't that easy, even impossible. But I never have faced such problem myself.

how easy is it to reduce a video to the right dimensions? guess you need some clever softare to do that? or does it have to be done frame by frame? now that would be extremely time consuming oif that was the case. i wouldn't mind getting a few videos on my phone, but they are ones that i would want to show off!

I neither heard nor tried doing it. But I also never heard about a tool which can re-encode Real Media files.
Maybe the Real Media Helix Producer does support (a big maybe).
