I currently use Sprint and have recently become very unhappy with the coverage. A lot of my friends have AT&T, which seems to get good coverage, but they also seem to cut out a lot when I talk with them. I have heard great things about Verizon, and I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with either service in Nor Cal. Thanks!!

I have Verizon and work in Livermore to Stockton. Dialing out does not work about 10% of the time (timer starts, called party picks up- but dial out person can't hear a thing). Digital coverage with AT&T is MUCH better in out lying areas (my wife's 3360 get's more digital signal than my LG510). I'll be switching to AT&T when I find a good phone. I came from Cingular-they sucked, oversold the network, GSM signal is weakest of them all.

I live in the SJ area. I know that Att and verizon have about the same coverage. They are both pretty good. However, Tmobile and cingular are absolutely terrible here.

Both carriers have a great name for themselves up in Northern CAL. I was actually born and raised in SAC, so having it worth there whenever I visit home is big for me. From my past experience, At&t TDMA has done wonders for me, but my Verizon is also great up there. The only problem with Verizon that I have up there is that sometimes it does take 7-15 seconds to dial out and I've called customer service, but they told me everyone experiences that. Don't get me wrong when I say At&t though, because some go out and get At&t GSM and they think it is the same as TDMA, but that won't be fact until they finish GSM. So go with an At&t GAIT phone, Multi-band phone, or TDMA phone and you will be satisfied with the coverage, call quality, and reliability. As soon as you feel GSM is built out enough, than hop the boat, because there are a lot of cool services and products on their newer network.

I'm currently an AT&T GSM subscriber who is very unhappy with this service. I have called and/or spoke to AT&T representatives in person and they all blame the poor service on my Motorola T720. I have found that the phone is part of the problem; however, many of my close friends and relatives have migrated over to GSM from At&t's TDMA service with other phones and have/are experienced the same problem. I don't have problems everywhere. For example when I have visited large cities such as SF or LA the signal is good but near my hometown of Stockton and nearby towns the signal is terrible. At least 50% of the time I go into a store, theatre, ect. both my wife (siemens model) and I loose reception. Since becoming aware (3 months ago) of the new law allowing people to switch their number to a new provider, I have been doing a lot of research, so I can switch once my contract is up with AT&T on 12/20/03. So far I am sold on Verizon. I could have gone back to AT&T's TDMA service but I feel that this service will become a thing of the past the way they are pushing GSM, but also the TDMA phone selection sucks. Much of my research was done on forums like this one, but I was convinced by going around and comparing services with stores and dealers that carried at least to providers. So, in oder words I used a process of elimination.

AT&T GSM quality is extremely poor in the N. San Jose residential area and also Oakland Jack London SQ area.
When first sign up with them, their quality is acceptable. That was about 3 - 4 mo. back. Don't know if it is because more and more people are signing up with them, the quality is being compromised.
I do remember seeing a website (published by KRON 4 TV station) that publishes a map showing the dead-zone for each carrier in the Bay Area. Don't remember the URL anymore. Anyone knows of that site?

Just found the site you were talking about. It's on NBC 11 site. Try the link below. If it doesn't work, go to the NBC 11 website and type in dead zone for a search.

BTW, looks like they all suck except Nextel so I'm not too sure how truely accurate this is.
