I just bought 2 Motorola v551 phones and Cingular service from Wirefly.com. One is working fine and consistently shows 3-4 bars. The other shows 0-1 bar at the same location and is often not connected to the network. A Bluetooth utility I use seems to indicate that the phone is roaming.
I did a master reset and a master clear and pulled the battery and put it back as suggested by a cingular customer service person. They suggest that the phone is defective.I'm going to call Wirefly.com tomorrow morning and see about an exchange but I fear the hassle. Are there any secret opcodes I can enter to fix this sort of problem?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Two things you have to verify:
-Network problem: are you using the same sim? Different sim act differently even on the same network! Call CSR and told them to do a network push.
-Phone problem: the antenna connection may be broken. I read on hofo and a guy got a new phone with a broken antenna (same symptoms as yours). He has to solder it. Wokred wonderful after that!

Thanks for the idea. I tried putting my SIM in the other phone and it seemed okay so I am guessing its the phone. I don't think I am adept enough to solder the antenna... I'll call Wirefly and see how far I get...

I've gone through two 551s. The first came from Wirefly. After a few months, it had no reception in areas that used to be fine. I sent it back to Motorola, who sent me a new one. That one worked fine for a few months, and now it has the same problems.
I should probably send it back too, but I'm tired of giving up my phone for two weeks just to get three months service.
