The fact that the T610 can't ring properly is bugging the hell out of me.
I refuse to believe it's about protecting the speaker or my ears - in other modes (such as when changing ringtone volume or working with the Music DJ) there's no concern to protect the speaker by fading in, it plays at desired volume right away. The volume fade-in curve is exactly the same whether 'Increasing Ring" is on or off, so it's a bug, pure and simple.
I've also encountered two other bugs pertaining to the sound:
1) When you change the volume, it only plays a 'test ringtone' when increasing the volume, not when you're decreasing it. This was in T68i too, and was a confirmed bug, or rather, a confirmed "oops!".
2) On two occasions, I've lost sound completely and had to reboot the phone to get it back.
This is why I'm reluctant to buy Swedish... there's always a bunch of little bugs, typos and quirks. How stupid is it to ask for a *number* immediately after completing an SMS? How about showing the address book right away instead of forcing people to perform 4-5 selections before getting there?
OK, I'm in a grumpy mood today...

Technically speaking, playing a sound at a speaker's limit without fading in first could easily damage it. Whether or not you could do it on these phones without damaging them, I have no idea. If someone has seen what kind of speaker's in there it would be easy to figure out if it was even possible...

It is okay for you to refuse to believe it, but it is still true
When you are in other modes you have the mobile in front of you and not near your ears when the sound starts to play. When the phone starts to ring you'll not have any warning that it is about to ring if you would not have the warning signal and that is why they have added the warning signal. It would not feel good to have the phone next to your ears when it starts to ring full effect. You can argue that I'm not that stupid, but it is born a stupid person every minute and there are lawyers that would not hesitate to slap a law suit against Sony Ericsson and in America they can be ridiculously high

D'oh! Actually I think you're correct, and I'm the stupid one. All my phones prior to the T610 (including its predecessor T68i) have had a separate speaker for ringtones/sounds, but on the T610 they're using the same darn speaker for both listening and ringtones/alerts... this is either standard practice these days and I'm not up to date, or it's a new solution born out of the fact that the camera takes up space in this rather small phone so they couldn't cram another speaker into it. I just had my ear blown out (well, nah, no permanent damage) after I had trouble recording voice commands - I had a bluetooth headset connected and thought I could use it when recording commands, but when the screen said 'speak after the tone' there was no tone so I took off the headset and put the phone to my ear right just before the phone played a 'recording unsuccessful' warning sound: BLAAAAAAARRHGFHGHMMMMM!!!!! jeeeezes that freaked me out.
So yes, it's not a bug: If you have a ring volume below 3 (1-2), it will not fade in the ring tone if 'increasing volume' is turned off, but at 3-6 it will fade in no matter what. Case closed.
BTW, the camera is so crappy I'd gladly trade it for a secondary speaker...

As for the t300/t310
The normal speaker is at the right of the phone and only be used for monophonic tones.
The polyphonic ringtones comes out the speaker where you are answering at .
So the polyphonic ringtones are a lot quieter than the monophonic ringtones.
Too bad that SE has made it like this

I dont have this phone yet but I am extremely interested in it. Is what you're saying this: say I have a song I've created as my ring and upload it into my phone. The ring itself starts at an extremely low tone and slowly and gradually gets louder? Actually how low does it start and how long does it take to get to full volume? another thing...why would anyone have the handset up to your ear if you're not on the phone talking with someone?

1. the ringing begins with about half of the volume, and fades in for about 2 seconds
2. and who said that you are not on the phone?

so the "call waiting" alert feature has a ring instead of a tone? I dont understand why you would need a safety feature like the ascending ring. please gimme a scenario, im kinda slow
