I've used Mobile Phone Tools to trim and upload mp3 ringtones from CDs that I have. I've also used Audacity to trim the mp3--it seems to work a bit easier for me. You can also use p2kman to upload the ringtones, but it is more complicated.

Sound Forge (by Sony,Sonic Foundry) is a great program for music editing. You can do pretty much anything with it. Then just upload it to your phone with MPT.
BTW...none of this is freeware, so where you get it is up to you. Im sure you can figure that one out.
You do, however, need to invest in a data cable. (well worth it)

Thanks...I've been lurking from time to time to see if anything is new--maybe in the future I will try something more adventurous than uploading ringtones and pictures to my phone
For the first poster, here is where I purchased Mobile Phone Tools.

Use the code tech97 for a 15% discount--it ends up being $25 and then you have a legitimate copy!

Freeware to make MP3 ringtones:
Exact Audio Copy (EAC)- extracts songs from audio cd's.
Audacity - a sound editor, use to trim and edit sound files.
Lame - an MP3 codec. Can be used as a plug-in for EAC and Audacity.

okay so how do you upload the ringtones using just p2kman? I've had trouble with my MPT lately and it keeps crashing, and I've tried uploading with p2kman -just guessing at what I'm doing- with no luck. Any help as to how to do this would be appreciated
