I've had a contract w/Verizon for about 6 years. While I'm basically happy with the service, their CS leaves something to be desired.
Under their New Every Two program, I'm eligible for a new phone (or a $100 credit towards one) however not sure if I want to get locked into another 2 yr contract. I called their CS to ask if I can simply purchase a new phone w/o utilizing the New Every Two & I've gotten several different answers.
The gist of what they're telling me is that I can't just buy a phone unless I sign a contract. Does anyone know anything about this policy?
Thanks!

You can purchase a phone without a contract but since Verizon has no way of knowing if you will stay with the company they cannot give you any discounts on the phone. If you sign a contract they know that they will recuperate any money they may have lost that day. Without a contract you will pay full retail at a store so you might as well look on ebay to get a phone and just switch to that phone. Just make sure the esn is not reported lost or stolen before you purchase.

The way I understand it, your being under contract affects the amount of discount you get when you purchase a new phone. I've had my phone for a year, and I've been told that I can get about a $50 discount on phones (by calling customer service and ordering through them) rather than the full $100. If I waited longer, I'd get the full $100. Since I'm planning to spend a full $300 getting a new phone this month, that doesn't bother me to do it early.
Interestingly enough, with Verizon your service contract and your phone contract are two different things. For instance, my service contract started last year. A month ago I changed my plan to a new promotion that required a two-year contract extension, so now I can't cancel my contract without a fee until 2007. However, I got my phone last November, and even though I'm now in a (technically) three-year service contract, I can do an early upgrade now ($50 discount on a new phone) or I can wait until later on this year ($100 discount) and my newly-extended contract doesn't make any difference.
Also, they may have been sort of herding you away from buying a new phone outright, because you can do that anywhere, from anyone. As was stated above, Verizon isn't as sure to receive profit if you buy a phone outright, and especially if you don't get one from them.

there should be no such thing as a 3 year contract. anything that verizon does in the computers only resets contracts so that they are two years from day of changes. Contracts arn't stacked. You are correct in that discounts are based on how much of the contract you have finished. If you have less than a year left you can get 1 yr pricing discounts if you are out of contract you get 2 yr pricing and if you have had your phone for 22 months and a plan 34.99+ you get your extra 100 credit. Any discounting however on a phone resets the contract or starts it at two years from respective date. You can opt out of any discounts if you would not like your contract affected.
