I have had a Motorola V400 for less than a year and the speaker volume in the handset occasionally gets very low, making it difficult to hear the person on the other line. This happens when I have the phone to my ear, not when I am using speakerphone. It seems to have gotten worse overtime. A co-worker and a friend of mine have the same phone and have both experienced the same problem. I have treated the phone very well and have never dropped it or had it come in contact with moisture. Is this common with this particular phone? Has anyone else had this problem?

I have both the V400 and V600 for over 6 months. My ear piece have not gone bad. You may want to increase the volume by editing your gain_table. That may help.

I too had the same problem. I could not hear from any landline unless I used my speakerphone, and the only cellular calls I could hear (sometimes) were my best friend and daughter who don't have motorola phones. My family members who also had v400's could not be heard on a regular call. I contacted my local Cingular office and they gave me the warranty 800 number. They also said they had had other complaints about the same thing. I talked to a nice young man at Cingular who verified there are some speaker problems with this model. So I'm getting a replacement under warranty. Changing the volume settings doesn't help, so don't give up! Call your carrier.

I had this problem recently as well, If your phone is less than a year old it is under warranty, I got it replaced but the replacements are refurbished and their repair guys suck, my next one didn't have service except 1 bar anywhere I went, the phone they replaced that with is en route back to motorola because Cingular said they cant fix it so beware.

Usually you wont get a refurb phone if your not notified of it, it does seem that the problem is a widely popular problem, try to P2K Software through the USB Cable

I had the same volume problem with the earpiece on my V400. Didn't get REALLY bad until a month after my 1-yr. warranty expired. Motorola said they would still fix it for free, I just had to pay to send it to Texas to their service center for 10-12 business days.
HOWEVER, I fixed it myself by taking off the cover, removing the metal case that holds the LCD screen in and using rubbing alcohol on the contacts between the circuit board and the speaker. I also shoved a small wad of folded up paper between the metal case and the circuit board at the point where the contacts meet the speaker to ensure a firm connection. 500% improvement immediately.
It's only been a few days, so I am not sure how long the fix will last, but here's hoping!

I had same problem, headset volume was extremely low. I had to say what a million times because I had to push the phone into my ear to barely hear them. And for the longest time I was frustrated. I did the gain_table.bin edit and it still was low even at the highest value possible (and that hex editing took lots of time to setup).
One day, I used my can of compressed air, and blew all the holes of my phone, the part where you hear, data cable access point/charger, and the outside speaker. It works great now. Honestly, I believe some magic happened to my phone because I dont see how it could have been fixed by blowing air. OR maybe gain_table kicked in. Anyway, make sure to have volume all the way up in call and have your ring on loud setting.
Besides low earpiece volume on my v400, I love all the other features of my phone, and my mp3s are too cool.
Hope this helps, or helps you think of things to fix that ever present volume problem everyone seems to get.

Well I fixed it sort of, without taking the phone apart
used some contact cleaner and the bristles of the brush and just kinda tried to clean it from the outside pushing in, and now I can hear people!
So for anyone else who has this problem, try electrical contact cleaner, it's wet, but it is safe for this application...
