I have an LG L1200 phone with Cingular service. I'd like to make custom ringtones, but I'm not sure which format the ringtones have to be in. Cingular.com claims that both polyphonic and music tones work. I followed http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic23643.html to convert my .mp3 (or .wav) file into .mid format, but when I sent it to my phone, I got an error saying that the file was too big (80kb). How big can ringtones be? It was only a 26 second clip.

I'm not sure what other file formats can be used with the L1200. I've heard conflicting answers about .mp3 files. Can anyone break it down for me so I could possibly get these custom ringtones to work?

Thanks.[/url]

Our L1200 phones work a bit differently than the VX7000 (the phone in the thread you mentioned). Music files have to be in .mmf format. It takes a bit of work but I can tell you how to do it. First, you need two applications:
You'll need dBpowerAmp Converter 11.0 to convert the MP3 or CD to a WAV file. You can download it here:
http://www.download.com/3000-2140_4-10042534.html
You'll also need the PSMPlayer for MMF conversion:
http://www.freeringers.net/apps/PsmPlay5.0.exe
1. I'll call the file "test.mp3". Run dBpowerAmp and select the "test.mp3" file and click "Open".
2. Change the drop downs to be "Wave", "16 Bit (CD)", "8000 Hz", and "1 'Mono'".
3. Click "Convert >>" and once it's completed click "Finished" and you'll have a file named "test.wav" in the same directory as the MP3 source file (or in the C:\Converted Music\ directory).
4. Open the Windows Sound Recorder (included with Windows) and open the "test.wav" file created in step 3 (if you can't find Sound Recorder, Start->Run->"sndrec32"->OK).
5. Shorten it to 30 seconds or less (I find that 20 second files work best). You can also crop it so it starts at the beginning of the choirs. To crop the audio clip, use the "Edit" menu to "Delete Before Current Position" or "Delete After Current Position".
6. Click the "File" menu and select "Save" which will overwrite the "test.wav" file.
7. Run PSMPlayer, click the "File" menu, select "Open", and select the "test.wav" file.
8. Click the "File" menu, select "Create SMAF", and select "SMAF 16chords(J-SKY)".
9. Change the "Max Size (byte)" to 65536 and make sure "Use high quality WAV (8KHz)" is selected, then click "OK" and save the file as "test.mmf".
Voila! You have your very own real music ringtone to upload. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply... however my first attempt didn't work exactly. I created the file, exactly as you said, and it's now called kd.mmf on my desktop (65536 bytes). Now, to get it to my phone, I was sending it as an attachment to 979###0232@mms.mycingular.com (my phone number). I got the MMS message, but when I tried to open the message, it says "the part application/octet-stream; name=kd.mmf; type=mmf was removed from the message as not supported." Any ideas on where I went wrong?

EDIT: when I created the .mmf file, I was told that "Specification size was exceeded." The kd.mmf file is in fact exactly 65536 bytes on mt computer. Did that mean anything?

OK, i got a friend to upload the file to his website, and i went to it through my phone's browser. it tries to connect, but comes back, saying "Document too large." I change the mmf file to be only 50000 bytes. Upload it again, still "too large." I'm soooo close!

EDIT: OK, i lowered the .mmf file to 5000 bytes, upload it, and it connects through the phone's browser, only it displays gibberish, with no items to display. Hopefully my experiences will help someone figure out where i've gone wrong.

I had the same problem when I tried to upload them to my own site. My solution was to go to a site that relays them for you (I can't think of the name, it was posted on here somewhere), and later I bought a data cable. Both of those ways works like a charm. I'm still not sure why my own site didn't work (I was able to transfer wall paper through there fine), I suspect it has something to do with the site itself and the file formats they support. *shrug*

EDIT TO ADD: I couldn't find the free relay site anywhere, but the site I use is www.freeringers.net . Its not free, it costs $8 for lifetime unlimited use. You can also upload your own wallpaper there.
