Hi everyone:
If i go to Asia and replace my Cingular SIM Card(in MPX220) with a local company SIM card will the phone work?. The MPX220 is quad band. I am just worried what will happen if i put the Cingular SIM back when i come back to USA(will it work )

Thanks

When you say unlocked do u mean Cingular has to do something or do u mean, can I remove the SIM chip( in MPX220 i can remove the SIM Chip)?

"Locking" or subsidizing a cell phone is a term used by GSM providers to prevent you from using a competitor's SIM card in a phone they subsidized to earn your business. Said differently, the providers (Cingular) often sell you a device for less than what they paid the manufacturer (Motorola). Locking the phone is their "insurance policy" you will keep service with them so they can retrieve the subsidy.

To test whether the device is locked, borrow a friend's t-mobile sim, and see if you're able to place calls without the phone asking for a password, its unlocked - go to Asia and use an Asian sim card. If it's locked (i.e., if it asks for a password), you'll need to get an unlock code from Cingular (good luck! - they locked it for a reason), or try a service on the web where you provide your IMEI number, and they give you an unlock code.

Many of the motorola's were sold unlocked/without subsidy passwords.
