This started yesterday but my phone display which has always said AT&T wireless, except when I was visiting family in another state, now says Cingular. Does that mean I'm now only accessing Cingular towers?

ATT merged with Cingular, and they must have renamed the towers. If you are being charged for roaming, you might want to have a call to ATT.

ATT was bought by Cingular. Cingular was only allowed to use the ATT brands for six months after the purchase. If you still have a ATT phone, the screen should now say Cingular. If you ARE getting charged for roaming though, it's still a good idea to call Cingular Billing.

Nokia phones must say AT&T/Cingular, Motorolas say Cingular (but not Cingular Wireless as it should if you are a Cingular customer (Cingular Orange)).
So, if your phone says Cingular instead of AT&T Wireless, it's the first Cingular's step of acquiring AT&T Wireless; however, your reception while on AT&T Wireless (renamed to Cingular) network has not been improved
There should be no roaming charges.
Enjoy your last year of your AT&T Wireless + Cingular benefits, because you will have to switch to Cingular when your contract expires.

Speaking as the person on the other end of the phone when you call customer care there are no plans to "force migrate" GSM customers to Cingular orange at this time...

you could try a manual network selection to see if there is an AT&T tower in the area that you are visiting. I doubt that you are getting charged for roaming or anything because im sure that cingular and At&T are roaming partners especially with the recent merger. Phone is prob displaying cingular because cingular has a stronger signal in that particular area and you network selection is prob set to automatic.
