THANKS A LOT EVERYONE.
On my first go i managed to clear everything apart from the menu icons.
Gone from 128kb free to 1900kb free.
I'll just re-download the games and sounds..
THANKS A LOT!

I Think i can say safely that it is impossible to remove vodafone menu icons using this trick.
I've done 8,9,10,11,12 seconds.
and the ugly 2 bit menu icons remain.
but im on 2150kb free now..

ok about the firmware upgrade for vodafone users.... (to R1L)
I called SE this morning to see where the nearest "do it while u wait" service centre is to me and got the following response....
"The vodafone version cannot be upgraded apparently, as SE have designed the phone to allow the operators to add their own "personal" touches. And while the phone can be upgraded this will not overwrite the vodafone branding..." which frankly I find hard to believe - especially as this does not seem to effect orange, O2 or T-mobile but anyway...
What about improvements to the firmware - as a vodafone customer am I not eligable to get these then???
A mate of a mate works for SE and he is going to try and find out about this for sure...
I might try vodafone now to see what they have to say on the matter...
on a personal note:
I wish the networks could just leave phones alone, there are enough badges and logos on the outside to tell everyone who you are with. No need in my opinion to then go and change the display elements to make them branded - especially when they do such a crap job of it. Whats the point of having a phone you can customise and personalise if you cant because the network wants their s**t all over it.
the expressoin "If it ain't broke don't fix it" springs to mind.
If anyone else out there has had a different experience with this or has successfully removed the vodafone branding then I would love to know how/where it was done so I can do it too!

I've tried it, worked great, deleted only the preinstalled pictures and Deep Abyss [which I've downloaded]. It was 56kB free, now it's 175kB [after the reinstallation of Deep Abyss]. Unfortunately, it didn't remove THPS4, which would give me 120kB more...

Only 156kB?
I did the trick and it deleted everything except some pics on the T300 and gave me 780kB
