... Really? Does your friend have a e315, also? Anyway, I never thought it was possible to download and allow a picture to be displayed in the exterior display. Ask your friend how s/he did it and please tell me, I would like to know as well.
Unlocking is where you "unlock" your phone to make it so that it will accept any GSM sim card (or something like that). Since your phone is on T-Mobile, there's a way you can "unlock" your phone so that it will accept GSM SIM cards from other cellular service providers, such as Cingular, AT&T, etc. Meaning that if you got a new plan with cingular or somthing, you can make it so that your "T-Mobile phone" will accept a cingular sim card.

OOOOH... he has nextel service, he bought a cord off ebay that he hooks up to computer and goes online and finds displays on some specail website, im not sure what it is or how it does it but it does. he said it was illegal though, i was wondering if there was an easier way. you can go to www.-edited- to transfer pictures on your desktop to for phone for free, that is pretty tight too...

TO CHANGE THE EXTERIOR LCD DISPLAY PICTURE YOU HAVE TO
1)backup your phone with optiflash 4.14 here is =>http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic4919.html
2)then after you have the firmware in .sre form you download MOT2BIN, its a console software so you don't just open it, you drag your .sre firmware onto the MOT2BIN and it'll create a .bin file in the directory
3) download Januka Samsung Firmware Modifier
==>http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/s/j/sjs342/Software_files/Januka% 20SFB.exe
4) open Januka and click on file->open then chose the .bin that MOT2BIN has created from your firmware.
5) go to the 16 bit compressed images and click Firmware scan, then try to find your image if it appears distorted click on the +/- of the width and height and try to get it into focus.(mine model is e316 so my external images is the address D6CF90
6) once you have found the original external image of your phone then highlight it and click export on the right side where the there is picture of a samsung phone. save it somewhere.
7)edit that picture that you exported with photoshop or some image editting program. save it.
then go back to the program and click the replace button and pick the editted picture.
9)goto file->export *.sre, rename it and click save.
10) close the Januka program and open optiflash and browse for the new .sre firmware that Januka created.
11)click on option->settings, goto the generic tab then check difference only. and click ok
12) now flash your phone. and you will have a new external display. Enjoy

just wondering...to change all firmware what kinda of cable do i need? i know there's an OEM serial cable, but my laptop doesn't have a serial connection. i've gone on ebay and found usb connections for the phone. should i get the ebay one or just by an adapter for serial-to-usb?
and what's the best software out there for managing data and such for this samsung e315?

Well the best cable to use for anything is the Serial OEM in my opinion, you can use the USB cable for flashing and data transfer though. js1662 (one of the more avid posters in Samsung talk) is using the USB cable and has posted that he has no problem using Optiflash/Pims & file manager. The only problem you may run into with the USB would be using unlocking softawre. If your cable doesnt come with software the best one that samsung is letting you download right now is Pims and FILE manager.

jpra923,
According to the Help File of Optiflash, I am using Optiflash 4.16, as long as your phone has passive bootloader, there is no problem to use usb cable. Serial cable is needed for older models that has active bootloader. As xXxSamsungxXx said, if you want to use unlock S/W like Cerebros or WinIMEI, you need a serial cable for that purpose since only serial cable has the D/L function. One thing that I am not sure is when you completely change the firmware it may change the IMEI as well. In that case, you need the unlock S/W to change it back to the phone's own IMEI and you will need a serial cable in that case. To add serial port to your laptop, you may consider the RS232 PC card.

thanks for eveyones help. i'm thinking of just purchasing the serial cable. i have an adapter for a serial-to-usb, so if i need serial i have it (i'll just have to use my desktop), and when traveling i can use my usb. sound good?
