Hi I was wondering if anyone knew any information about the quality of reception and service T-mobile has in the Los Angeles area (esp downtown LA). Thanks

Thanks | It's quite good, but no better than Cingular or AT&T, so choose the provider with the best deal for the plan you are interested in (for example, when it comes to a Family Plan, no one touches Cingular).

I have T-Mobile service and use it in the South Bay (Los Angeles County?), and I get reception almost anywhere I go.
It's just as good as Cingular for California residents.
I've used Sprint, AT&T, Cigular, and T-Mobile. I would rate them in the following order:
1.) Cingular
2.) T-Mobile (although I would put T-Mobile first if you're looking for Tri-Band phones and the Samsung v205. Cingular no longer offers Tri-Band phones).
3.) AT&T (My girlfriend uses the Panasonic GU87 from home and we get disconnected all the time. Her service is really dynamic, one second she'll have 3 bars, others she'll have none).
4.) Sprint (it's the worst, my Sanyo 5300 began to roam even when I was at home. The Sanyo 5300 is a freakin' amazing phone though).

I disagree here.
Cingular coverage is horrible. I've spoken to SEVERAL SEVERAL people lately about coverage. Everyone with Cingular complains about the bad coverage. It seems to be the worst. You walk into a building and you pretty much lose reception. Even just walking in between buildings seems to block the signal.
Cingular has a great family plan. That's their thing. I can't find a better plan than the one i have now with Cingular. I'm thinking of switching to T-Mobile and breaking away from the family plan, though. I want to know how godo reception is though. If it's as good as Cingular, that's pretty bad.
Verizon, I have heard is more expensive but pretty much the best as far as reception goes. Whenever I see someone using their cell phones at school in a building where it seems they couldn't get reception, I ask. It's usually Verizon, but never Cingular.

Cingular and T-Mobile contract their networks out to one another. T-Mobile's coverage on the east coast is pretty good while Cingular's coverage on the west coast is pretty good. By sharing tower access each company can get really wide coverage without a massive outlay of cash.

I live in Santa Clarita by Magic Mountain and ATT is horrible in that area. In fact, I work in Burbank and ATT is horrible there as well. I am planning on purchasing a Blackberry 7730 and going with T-Mobile. Any ideas on what kind of coverage I can expect before I execute the purchase?
