Hey,
I just bought a Motorola v80 off of eBay. I got it to replace my v400 (with Cingular) because the old one fell in the toilet.
The thing is... I actually ordered a v690, which specifically said it was unlocked.. they were out (the company is CellMall, cellmall@yahoo.com) and they offered me the v80 instead.
It came yesterday and I popped my SIM card in and nothing happened. I can't get it to pick up a signal. Does this mean that the phone is locked? If so, how can I check? ...and how do I go about unlocking the phone?
Thanks,
Danny

If the phone is locked, the phone will prompt for a subsidy code message.
I assume you popped in an existing active sim card?

Yeah, I took the sim card out of my old v400. It recognizes that it's my number and all that... but no service whatsoever.
My aunt got a new phone also (because I was getting a new one, she wanted one, too), a Panasonic G70 from a different company, and it has the same symptoms.
I talked to two women from Cingular customer service yesterday, one for five minutes or so and another for about a half hour. They took my IMEI number and my sim card number... and tried to send activation signals... but nothing ever happened.
Any idea what's wrong?

Strange that the CS can't solve it. Have you tried changing to different networks under network settings?

The people I've talked to don't seem all that smart. I had my friend call and pose as me last night while I was at work.. and they told him it was probably locked and to go to a Cingular store to get it unlocked... that was more than they ever told me. They didn't even mention the possibility of it being locked. They just told me to wait for it to activate and if it didn't call back.
____
Anyway, I have messed with the network settings... The options are:
-New Network
----search
.........Searches for network for a while and gives up.
-Network Setup
----band
........Set to Automatic
----type
........Set to Automatic
----speed
........Set to Medium
-Available Networks
.........Searches; no success.
____
It's frustrating to go without a phone. I was going to have to pay $300 to get a new v400 from Cingular, so I thought it would be easier to get one off of eBay. I paid $200 after shipping and insurance... and now it won't work. I'm getting frustrated!
Thanks for helping.

i'm having this exact same problem with my v80 right now, except it randomly started doing this.
it used to work perfectly fine for the last couple of months, but then one day all of a sudden it said "no service" and hasnt worked for about 3 weeks now.
i called up tmobile customer service, and they said that they were sending signals to my phone or something, and that it should be working, but it still doesnt.
did anyone finally figure out what was wrong with this dudes phone?
i dont want to have to throw away a perfectly good v80.

im almost possitive in saying that cing dose not suppoer the v80 hince cingular will not be able to assist you, if you bought that thrue a third party vendor you need to go to your point of sale to correct any issues you have with that device

I'm willng to bet that your V80 is a 1900 only device instead of 850/1900
check your available networks... it should tell you if you dont see an 850 network available that is what is going on...1900 is very limited

hmm...i just dont understand why it would work fine for me for the past year or so, but then suddenly just stop getting signal.
whenever i hit 'search for network' it just says 'searching for network' and then after a while it says 'no network found'
i just bought a cable to hook it up to the computer, so maybe i'll be able to fix it
