I'm on cingular, and I have a V551. My girlfriend has a V400. When the phones are next to each other I maybe have 2 bars, she has 5...
I used to have a Sony Erickson T616, and in my dorm room I had 4 bars and i was able to choose which tower I wanted to use (ATT or Cingular), and I always chose the Cingular tower since I had a better signal (4-5 compared to 1or2). Now I cannot switch over, and I only have 1 bar in my dorm room (most likely on the bad tower) - and I can't switch over to the other cingular tower that gives me better service.
Is there a way to switch over to another tower? Or get the type of signal the V400 has with my V551. I thought it was virtually the same phone..

Press Menu.
Select Settings.
Select Network.
Select New Network.

The only thing I have is to switch the band (850/1900, 900/1800)

Agh! I'm having a similar problem. This has been going on for months now. We're both Cingular customers (Orange).
My wife and I have the same phone (V551). At home, my phone has 5 bars, her has one. When her SIM card is put in my phone, suddenly my phone has one bar. So - it's the SIM, not the phone, right? Wrong. We've exchanged the phone and SIM 3 times each. The bad signal follows her SIM - no matter what phone its in.
She's a former Blue customer, I'm not. That's the only wild card. Cingular has no idea what is going on. I've spent HOURS with them on this issue. They keep saying, "ok, we've rebuilt her account" or "we've reset her connection settings" and nothing helps.
My guess is that her account is somehow looking for Blue towers. Has anyone had a similar problem only to finally have it resolved? Anyone work at Cingular who could experiment?
I need ideas.

Senator, I suggest taking your specific question over to the Cingular Talk forum. May have better luck there than here for this one.
