I just got a V551, and it's a great phone. Something strange is happening though, and the people at the Cingular store don't know what it is.
Every once in a while, a few times a day, I hear the familiar tone that we've all heard in the past right before the recorded message says "we're sorry, your call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number and try again"
The tone I am talking about comes right before that, on regular phones. It's that 3 tones, starting with the lowest sound, then the middle tone, the the highest pitch tone. I hope you know what I'm talking about, as I don't really know how else to explain it.
Anyway, when this tone occurs, (it's quite faint, and it comes through the ear speaker inside the flip) there is the little icon that appears, on the inside screen, and the little outside screen also, of 2 arrows, pointing opposite ways. This icon can be found on page 25 of the manual, half way down, for the CSD insecure call.
So, that icon appears, and also, in the very middle top part of the inside screen, the little phone shaped icon with the waves coming out of it appears also. This icon can be seen when you are on the phone.
The tone goes about 4 times, and the icons and everything dissapear when it's done. Other than that, this phone works great. I hope this is not any serious issue. It's a little annoying, as it sometimes happens when I'm using the phone.
I at least hope someone else has heard of this before, as no one seems to know what I'm talking about.
Thank you very much for your time,
Plink

Well, today it hasn't done it at all. It seems to have gone away completely, and I hope that's the case. I'll keep a look out.
Unrelatedly, I have another question.
I notice this phone comes with preset ring options. There's "Vibrate" "Loud" "Soft" "Vibe then Ring" etc.
I was wondering if there was anyway to add the vibration to the "soft" profile, or the "loud" profile, etc.
The ring profiles really don't seem to be that customizable at all. I had a simple Nokia 3560 (I think) before, and it let me do all this.
Is Motorola just set in it's ways? Or is this a possibility?
Also, I have all my contacts on my phone, and on my SIM card. They all show up twice in the address book. I was told that there is no way around this, besides deleting everything off the SIM card, or the phone, but that I can't have them in both places, and only have them show up once. Is this true?
Thanks a lot,
Plink

Ring Profiles
There is nothing you can do to change the ring profiles other than enable your V551 to have both vibe and ring go off at the same time.
Contacts
You can only have one or the other to display once on your phone for all your contacts.

So I guess I'm stuck not being able to change either of the things I want to change...
Oh well. Besides all that, it's a great phone.
Thanks again,

I finally got a new phone, and it doesn't do it at all.
All is good enough for now.
Thanks,

Ok for the phone book issue try this. Goto the phonebook and highlight one of the contacts. Menukey>Setup>View:>(change it to Primary Contact). Now it will show only the primary which is changeable to whichever one of the numbers you want. Goto the contact and scroll left or right and you notice the little icon will change depending on the contact type (e.g. home, mobile, etc). Then once again you hit the menukey>set primary. And there you have it. (I don't know if the contact has to be saved to phone or not.)
