Hi. I recently bought a DKU-5 (USB to Serial) cable off eBay. The data cable also came with a DKU-5 Connectivity Adapter Cable V3.0 software.
The first thing I did was executed setup.exe and installed the driver software and then rebooted. Next I installed the Nokia PC Suite 6.4.8 (Nokia_PC_Suite_64_en.exe). After installing the PC Suite software, I plugged the USB cable into my USB port and the wizard found the software in my computer. Then I plugged my Nokia 3205 into the end of the cable, right clicked the synchronise and clicked "Phone Selecter..." I checked USB and Serial, then configured the serial connection to use "Kingsun USB > COM device (COM4)", clicked ok and then clicked the refresh button. The phone still does not show up. Can anyone help?
Also, sometimes when I plug the phone into the cable, the phone will say "Ready for Data" and then it immediately says "Data Connection ended". Why is it doing this?

That's why you shouldn't buy cheap imitations on eBay... they mostly are crap.
Cheap built -> errors occure
And if the phone says "Accessory not supported" it is total crap. As the phone says... it won't work with this cable.

PC recognizes the cable everytime no problem, its just the phone that gives me attitude on occasion... "enhancement not supported". so am i stuck with a crap cable? maybe i should clean the connectors? how much should i expect to pay for a good DKU-5? my ghetto dell laptop does not have infrared is it possible to buy a USB type infrared device? I noticed that you guys recommend infrared for it is inexpensive and i am all about that. =) thanks for your help guys.

Sure you can get a infrared-dongle.
Infrared is more reliable (in my opinion), because you don't need a new cable when changing the phone and/or the brand.
There is no perfect way of connecting the phone. Some people do have problems, some not...
I personal never had really trouble of connecting the phone... always used infrared... now I'm using bluetooth... no problems at all.

How do I know for sure if my cable is crap or if it's just the software not working with the cable, which is what I think my problem is. I can't get the Kingsun (COM4) to stay selected. I think that is why the phone is saying "Ready Connection" and then immediately saying "Connection Ended"... it sees a connection to the computer, but when the computer does not see it, it ends the connection between the two.

Tried using the MobiMB-Trial? It's an alternative to PC Suite for uploading stuff.
Mostly it is PC Suite which "recognizes" the cheap cable and refuses to work.

I have been having problems connecting my Nokia 3220 via DKU-5 cable to USB port on my Windows XP / Windows 2000 dual-boot pc.
This has been a interrmittant problem where the connection will either work or seems not to be found at all. I go to the control panel and look at the device manager and sure enough when it is not working the NOK serial connection is not detected and not displayed in my device manager.
This however would work once in a while and thought that it was a problem with a software and driver issue. So, after uninstalling and reinstalling the software after hand full of times. I figured out that it is not an interrmittant software / driver glitch.
However, after some thought about the cable and the low voltage communications going through this cable. I thought that the problems could be caused by outside (around the room and pc location) "noise". So, I then decided to wrap the cable with tin-foil and place the phone and cable in a location as far as possible from eletronic noise making devices. This is including; AC outlets, pc equipment, and any of its cables.
Sure enough after rebooting the computer and then connecting the cable, I now have working communications.
I am still in the process of testing this threory, however this seems to have worked over the several days of usage. You may want to test this theory yourself and let me know what kind of results you have.
Thanks,
pb

I found this works for my Nokia 6101b with generic DKU-5 cable to avoid "Data Enhancement not Supported" errors. Basically, it works around problems withthe Nokia software and PnP. Assume PC Suite 6.81.13.0 is installed on WinXP:
1) from windows, stop the ServiceLayer service (start->run->"services.msc", rightclick and Stop the servicelayer service)
2) delete the dku-5 from Device manager (rightlick my start->settings->control panels->system->hardware->device manager, expand the "Ports" container, right click and uninstall the DKU-5 thingy and it should disappear from the screen)
3) redetect the dku-5 (at the top of Device Manager, rightclick the computername-icon and select scan-for-hardware-changes. when the DKU-5 is detected, do automatic install. if the installer prompts for location of the usb2vcom file, browse to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\ folder)
4) connect phone to dku-5 cable. winxp should notify you it installed the new hardware
5) start the ServiceLayer service again, the same way you stopped it before
6) open Nokia PC Suite and it should show "Nokia 6101 connected via serial cable"
Nokia's developers seem to have done a really sloppy job on their Nokia PC Suite software. Not only is the whole package bloatware, but the ServiceLayer service is a real problem. It also runs everytime windows boots, even though it's an application you'll use infrequently, and it often interferes with windows PnP. It would be much better to have it operate as a windows Manual service, and let the PC Suite start and stop it sparingly only as needed. The service should also be called "NokiaServiceLayer" not just "ServiceLayer". Otherwise it's easily mistaken for spyware. It's just very sloppy.
