I have a V551 on Cingular and so does my wife and going to Europe.
How do I make calls in Italy to another V551/Cingular user in Italy?
Do I have to do anything special other than changing to an international plan for the 2 months I am there?
If someone in US calls me while in Italy, does the call go through as normal?
Anyone know any resources to get up to speed on international calls?

you both have to have the world connect feature at minimum to place a call when you are abroad for starters...

your roaming rate will be 1.29/min...if you have discounted international roaming it will drop the roaming rate to .99/min

for someone in th USA calling your phone the caller dials the number as per normal...

if you are having trubble connecting to the network there put your phone in the network mode... here the menu setting

Press Menu.
Select Settings.
Select Network.
Select Available Networks.
Your phone displays a list of available networks.
Scroll to the network you want.
Press VIEW to view network details.
Press REGISTER to register with the network.

some models require a manual network search

if you have any difficulties at all call (916) 843-4685 collect from a landline phone this is international wireless care for ATT/Cingular

Good information in your post, but you're assuming the person has an older SIM card - most of the new ones block the network search capability.

As for the calling, its $1.29 minute on your bill if you:
Call the US
Call to a local number in-country
Receive a call from the US
Call another US cell phone (note, if you call another Italy based US cell phone, you'll both be paying $1.29/min or $.99 if you get the add-on).

If you've had service with Cingular for 6 months (and gets a rep that understands their policy), they will give you the unlock code so that you can use a pre-paid SIM while you're there. Usually the pre-paid SIMs have no charge for inbound calls.

The downside is that people calling you from the states will pay international long distance + the cell phone surcharge. If you call your home long distance provider (or look up their rates on-line) they should be able to tell you what the upcharge is. The prepaid SIM cards can usually be had fairly reasonably, but it varies from country to country and provider to provider.

I have a TIM (Italian provider) card that I use from time to time that I bought from a US dealer before leaving for $80. It was a rip-off; they sold the same package in Italy for 30€.

Good luck - feel free to post or send an email to me.

(snipped)

it was my understanding that in order for the phone to "work" abroad you had to have a 900/1800 mhz phone and an international roaming feature had to be active

to the best of my knowlege on some models need to be set to manual search in order to connect...

the sim doesnt block the search... the provider doesnt allow the registration...
