Talked good friend into signing up for the North America Plan, he arrived here in Baja yesterday with his new phone and service, made two calls and now when he turns on phone, does not get a signal. I check my Telcel phone standing next to him and it has a full signal. Could Mexico/telmex/telcell be blocking this service in Mexico? We have second visitor here with standard Nationwide Cingular service, his works fine, however, does have a roaming charge and other fees. Does anyone have a working Cingular North American Plan working in Mexico?

that person may need to do a manual network search to find a tower... some models require that

Also check and find out if his phone is a dual band phone and if so does the local carrier that you are using in mexico support the frequency that his phone runs on.

the manual network search negates that action...if it finds a tower it can use it

since it's roaming, it probably is having registration problems. any cellphone outside of it's home area had a harder time with 'staying connected'. most of the times it's seamless but when your away and it dropped registration...if it has already worked down there then we know there is no roaming restriction. pull the battery and leave it disconnected for several minutes (or even a half hour if you can do it). put the battery back on and give it a minute for signal. if it show 3+ bars, immediately then place an outbound call.
it really sounds like the phonewas on too long and now is not pinging the tower to stay registered.
hope this helps....

I work in the San Diego border area and i travel a lot from tijuana to los cabos. I've had the North America plan since cingular has it and has been working well. Ive had 5 phones since and the only time i had trouble is when i had a phone that wasnt a world phone.
You need to have a multi band phone in order to use the north america plan. Ive never had any problems and it is the best plan ever!

We subscribe to Cingular's North American Plan and use the service extensively in Mexico.
On the average of twice a month, almost always on Saturdays, Telcel's data channel becomes extremely congested, resulting in:
1- Inability to check minutes or bill.
2- Inability to send e-mail.
3- Inability of callers to reach your phone in Mexico.
4- Frequently the congestion is so bad that if you logoff you cannot re-register.
5-Cingular handles the error incorrectly and tells the caller that your phone is no longer in service.
The outage lasts from twelve to fifteen hours and you can set your clock by it.
Today is Tuesday. I'm in Guaymas, Mexico. All day the system's data channel has been congested and though I can call out, nobody can reach me. There's no handshaking.
Cingular tells me that when I get back to the U.S. they can upload a change to my NAM, switching me to Moviestar. Moviestar has excellent service, a U.S. type ring, but less coverage.

Have Cingular service and a V551 Motorola phone. I am interested in using this cell phone on a remote ranch on the Pacific coast west of La Paz, BCS, Mexico. Have been told by Cingular when I switch to their North America plan that this plan in Mexico uses 1900 MHz. I Thinking about buying a High Performance 1850-1970 MHz 10 dBi Radome Enclosed Yagi Antenna to use with my cell phone to boost reception. Interested in anyone's experience with this combination. Also I am interested in knowing if anyone has experience using the V551 for internet access with a laptop while in Mexico. Have gotten different answers from different people at Cingular as to cost and if it is possible. Also I am very interest in learning more about the uploading the change to NAM which switches service from TelCel to Moviestar. I currently have a Mexican base station cell phone with Moviestar at this remote ranch with a Yagi antenna, but I am pretty sure that it is not 1900 MHz.
