nextel is CDMA... att/cingular are GSM and TDMA in the same spectrum

I dont think nextel is CDMA is IDEN is kind mix with CDMA & GSM is it not? It does use simcard

I stand corrected....this was what I was just reading on nextel... got them confused with sprint...they are CDMA...

Nextel caters mostly to business users, and offers unique services such as the "walkie-talkie" Direct Connect push-to-talk feature. Nextel uses Motorola's iDEN technology. They use an unusual set of small "SMR" frequency bands near 800-900 MHz, which are seperate from the 800/850 and 900 MHz cellular bands. They offer Motorola phones exclusively, since Motorola is the only manufacturer of iDEN phones. In December 2004, Nextel agreed to a merger with Sprint. The deal is expected to be finalized in the 2nd half of 2005.

As I've said in earlier posts, T-Mobile is a 1900 carrier (they own no 850 spectrum). All but a couple of their devices only support 1900 in N.A. If you want to see the difference between 1900 only and 1900 + 850, compare Cingular's coverage map to T-Mobile's. The spider web-like design of T-mo's map will show the major urban areas covered + highways. If you need to use your device outside of that, better make sure it has 850.

This is a great thread and I'm wondering if anyone can clear something up for me... I'm looking at switching from a phone with 800/1800/1900 to one with 900/1800/1900 for use only in the US with Cingular. I know the GSM maps show where 1900 is available, and with the help of "elmo" I have seen the GSM/1900 coverage maps, but I'm wondering what specific areas currently ONLY have 800/850 and not 1900. If I could subtract the T-Mobile map from the Cingular map, I'd get what I'm looking for. Does anyone know where to find such a coverage map? I really want to know what areas I currently have access to because my current phone supports 800/850 that will disappear if I get this new phone that does not support 800/850. Thanks!

here are a list of 850mhz only carriers

most of which dont actually provide service but provide transmission for other companies... ie att/cingular (or someone else) rents time on them...there are a lot of 850/1900 there as well... these are 850 only

In Portland, OR Cingular is shutting down the ATTWS 1900 towers as they upgrade them to 850. That's the impression I get from the CS and retail store people I've talked to so far.

Sucks for me since I have a 900/1900 Nokia 3650 and all the new Nokia phones are 1900. (The one I want anyways, the N90)

Why would Cingular intentionally shut down 1900 GSM?

as far as i'm aware, cingular is going 850 because of the range...lesstowers cover more area.

UMTS is operating on 1900 and they actually need to make a hardware overlay to the existing GSM network, then put HSDPA as a software upgrade.

Hi, I just have a simple question which I can't seem to get a straight answer from ATT or Sony. I have ATT with Nokia E62.

I am looking at the Sony touch screen line which has 4 unlocked phones at the moment all with the band fzh below. (P1i is what I am looking at)

My question is will they work in the US on ATT network without EDGE? at the GSM 1900 level worth spending 500 dollars for?

If anyone can help me out here. that would be great. Thanks! Have a great Thanksgiving!

your chances are slim to none for coverage without the 850 the majority of At&t's network is 850 so i would recomend against it , fins a touch phone that has both 850/1900 lg just came out with a touch screen , and 3g , only available in europe right now not sure if it has 850 or not
