For Firmware-Version just press *#0000#
No, Vodafon won't do the update, you have to go directly to a Nokia Care Centre. Go to this Nokia-Site and search for one near you.

Thanks for the help, i went to them and they said that as i brought my phone overseas it would a) cost me money and b) there is about a 5% chance the update will kill the phone outright due to nonacceptance of the software. Any known work arounds for this?
Also is there any way in which i can get a list of bug fixes/ changes in versions of firmware?

If still have the bill and bought it at a official Nokia-Dealer and not second hand or else, you have warranty and the have to do it.
And if you have warranty, you will get a new phone, when it's killed due the update.

hmmm, this also makes me wonder...
I'm also in New Zealand, and I purchased my phone in Taiwan (6610) and am interested in updating the firmware when the 5.xx comes out.
Which nokia service place did you go to?
There's Accord Customer Services which do quite a good job, I wonder if they'll cover any damage done, as they're Nokia licenced and all... I guess there's no such thing as international warranty on Nokia stuff, but if they break it... wouldnt it be their fault? maybe i'll look up NZ's consumer rights :p
My friend's dad works at Mobile Fone/Phone Repairs, I think the one in Mt Wellington, I'll ask one of the guys at his work next time (coz he dosent do Nokias himself, another staff does)

Yeah I went to the mobile phone repair on moorhouse ave in chch and they said to me that because it was from Hong Kong it might die and they only guarantee work done on New Zealand phones.
If i have the warantee card though, you would think it would make a difference. Though i guess the warantee is only on parts and the part wasn't defective until someone else broke it and that someone else said that they don't guarantee their work on overseas phones.
It is tempting to ask consumer rights about this but I am sure that they will say that they don't have to guarantee their work.
If you do ask one of your fathers work mates then let me know what they say.
Just out of curiosity how much did you pay for you phone in taiwan as in Hong Kong mine was $591 inc shipping as opposed to $900 over here...
