Is it true that you can no longer activate StarTAC phones? There must be a way... Verizon Wireless customer service basically said "Nope, no way, your screwed".

Due to the FCC E911 requirement, any phone, customer owned or not, cannot be activated unless it is E911 capable. So, you StarTac is not capable and per the FCC, can't be activated. The actual deadline is 12/31/05 but carrier need to push for better E911 penetration in their customer bases to comply with the ruling. Because of this, pretty much anything from nowq on needs to be E911 capable.

I'm leaving Verizon as a result of this BS. The FCC mandate is real, but from what I've read in forums, Verizon is the only company jumping the gun on hosing their customers. I have a perfectly good StarTac to replace my broken one, but can't use it.
Verizon should be the last vendor to screw customers in this manner, seeing as how Verizon subscribers always have the crappiest phones to choose from. Yes, it's the manufacturers' fault for continually releasing GSM-only models, but Verizon needs to acknowledge this competitive disadvantage and do everything possible to mitigate it.
I'll be going with T-Mobile for the sole reason that I ican get a Motorola PEBL.
The PEBL and the Razr V3x look like the only worthy successors to the StarTac; the current Razrs inexplicably have the side buttons mounted next to THE SCREEN. Who the hell holds the phone by its screen?
CLUELESS VERIZON, CLUELESS MOTOROLA.
