I have a nokia 3300, which works for 850/1900 Mhz. bandwidth. it is not working with Indian networks as they are on 900/1800 Mhz. Will updating the firmware of this fone help in using it on my network?

Are you sure the phone is unlocked?
It's possible your previous carrier locked it to their
service. If that's the case I'm sure some folks here can help you out with unlocking it.

I am not sure whether the phone is unlocked. The signal is not coming while the sim card (i tried almost all providers - airtel, hutch, bsnl, aircel) display the phone book and other data from Sim card. Only the signal is not received. A local service engr. when contacted say that the phone has two locks - sim lock and service lock. Unlocked Phone means the phone is unlocked for the US network. It has to be unlocked further to work with the indian network. Is that true? if so, how can it be done? Thanks in advance.

As you said: they are using different band frequencies... unlocking won't bring you anything.
As I heared, is istheoretically possible if the european/asian firmware is flashed to the phone. But than it won't work in the USA.
But I never heared from anybody doing it.

That's fine. I don't need this phone at US. I need to get this working here. But, will an European flash update will help? or will there be any hardware limitation on the phone?

No idea.
As I said: it was something I heared, but can't affirm.
But I think there will be a problem, because the US version has a full qwerty keyboard, the european version has a normal keypad instead (make a visual comparision on the Nokia websites). I guess that would make problems.

Ok. Coming to the other point, is there any country lock for India as so with US lock? If that lock is removed, only then it will accept signals? Hutch India says that they support 1900 Mhz. based mobiles but, after unlocking. They are also operating in the bandwidth 900/1800. But, is it possible that they support 1900?

Afaik there is none GSM 1900 support in India.
It is used in the US and Canada and is scheduled for parts of Latin America and Africa.
