I guess you've got the assigned ringtone on the MMC?
Sometimes they are too slow to react in the correct time.

Check the ringtone assigned for groups. If you have assigned a ringtone for the group and you delete the ringtone on your phone. The default nokia tone will be automatic assign. And other thing is to check the profile you are using.

yea they're on my MMC... I have a 128kb or whatever, the 128 one, so if i dont have so much stuff on it does that make it faster? like make it so the nokia tune wont come on? or is there no real answer

It has nothing to do with full or empty card...
The phone gives only energy to the card when it is needed. So when you don't use the phone for a while, it needs more time to react.
Solution: save the ringtone on the phones internal memory.
This should do it.

Yeah I have that problem too and sometimes it doesn't even ring. Do what Bjoern says, import into internal memory

I had this problem as well.
MP3's worked fine as ringtones with my 32mb card but when I upgraded to a 512mb and started doing playlists it wasn't able to use MP3's from MMC. I also noticed that people were telling me the phone was always engaged?!?
If you use a larger capacity MMC I would do as suggested and use a ringtone from internal memory.
