Yes, this is my first post and I am acknowledging that I work for Cingular Customer Care.
Feel free to ask general questions regarding service or plan information.
What I cannot do:
Give Subsidy/Unlock Codes
Issue Credits
"Hook you up"

Will any unlocked GSM phone work on the Cingular network, provided it uses the correct frequency(s)? I have a Cingular SIM card and want to buy a phone that Cingular doesn't sell, will it work? Thanks.

Yes as long as the phone is gsm and supports the cingular frequency then you will be able to put your sim card into the phone and use it with the company. Just keep in the mind if the phone is not cingular branded then you will need to get it configured by cingular CC or technical support so you can use their wap deck (m-mode) and send MMS and Internet if applicable.

Peter it may or may not. We've had some issues with our 64 Genesis SIM Cards. If you have a 32k SIM, yes...a unlocked phone will work with Cingular. If you have a newer 64K SIM (it'll say on the sim) you have a good chance but I cannot guarantee it.
Best way to know what you have:
Have you signed up for new service since Nov. 15th 04? If you started after that date, there's a good chance you have a 64k SIM. If you started before then you have a high probability that it'll work and you have a 32k sim.
My understanding from unlocked phones is that any SIM will work. I have never had problems with unlocked phones so use it at your discretion. At this point it rely's on the phone. I would be 90% sure it'll work.

Samsung's right. If you do any MMS or Internet (MediaNet/Mmode) you will need the right wap settings. If that's the case, I can find the settings from you Monday Thru Friday. I work 330pm to 1230am CST. I'll check my PMs before I go to work and reply to them as well as posts after I get home.

Cingular Rep:
Cingular, inspite of the letter stating that they will let me keep my old plan from Sun Com. I have the SunCom Unplan, Unlimited minutes in my area with a roam rate guarentee. They are really not letting me keep my old plan. The roam rate guarentee is 25 cents. They want to charge me 79 cents. They have also stated that the phone will not let me know when I am roaming. Yet the agreement states that I will only pay roaming when the phone states roaming.
What are my options? I am one year into a 2 year contract. I guess I will get $200 from Cingular if they terminate the contract. Right?

I don't roam very often, but when I do roam at least under the current plan, I know that I am roaming. Under the new plan, I am told I will not know when I am roaming and that it will cost 79 cents a minute instead of the 25 cents a minute. With the unlimited plan I don't worry about my minutes, I spead most of my time on the cell phone even in the office. Long distance calls are free, so it makes sense to use my cell phone in the office. My usage is around 3000 minutes a month for $50 plus $5 for roam rate guarentee. This is a regional plan. VA, parts of NC, and parts of SC.
The principal of the matter is. . . a letter from Cingular stating that I can keep my old plan and renew it for 2 years. They are wanting to make exceptions to the agreement.

I recently added a 3rd phone to my Cingular account its a V551 and i love it, I travel alot over seas so i asked the the Sales rep a Mr Montez in a Corpus Christi Cingular store if the phone was locked to cingular or if i could use a local provider cash card when i was over seas. He said yes no problem,( I also asked if it was locked to Cingular and he said no!!) Is that true or was i fooled. Iam not sure any more. Tried to put in a nextel sim i have from work and it asked for the subsidiary code what ever that is. If he lied i will be there with a can of woopass monday morning
