What if I wanted to transfer a number that was not mine, but I know is available? Is there some way that cingular confirms to see that the number was actually in your possession before they assign it to you? What about transferring a land line number?

Well, they don't transfer numbers without transferring accounts. If the phone number you want isn't associated with your account, then no would be your answer. Can't transfer land line numbers either.

If you want to see the details, call our Porting Administration Center. 1-888-898-7685. You'll have to be a Cingular Customer. They'll give you details on policy's regarding porting in another customer's number.

here are some prerequisites to line number portability
it can be any phone number (beeper Land line etc)
it must be within you customer service area (you cant have a NYC number ported to LA)
it must be active (so if the service is cancelled you cant port the number or reactivate that account)
you have to be the account holder of the number being ported
these basic requirements are for all carriers

They must have changed policy then, when I signed up for service last year I wasn't allowed to port my land line number. *shrug*

Yeah, I'm not sure if they can port a number that's in their reserve pool. You'd have to start service with us, and then port out (make sure to do it quick so you don't get hit with a lot of the fees.)

The main factor in Porting: The number to be ported HAS to be active.
If it's in their reserve pool, there is absolutely nothing you can do to get it, unless you start up service with their provider and see if you can request a number.
