Maybe someone can help me or lead me in the right direction. just yesterday i began the process of switching my service from cingular to Tmobile. i ordered the new phone online, and requested my current number be moved to the new phone. my understanding was that my old phone (cingular) would be up and running until the new phone (tmobile) was recieved and activated. i received email instructions from tmobile stating this with a warning not to deactivate my old phone until everything was running smoothly with the new phone. simple enough, right...evidently not when youre dealing with cingular.
this morning i tried to used my old phone only to discover that i no longer had service and the sim card had been deactivated. when i called cingular, they told me that the policy for all cell phone companies is when they receive the notice from the new phone company requesting the phone number they automatically deactivate the old phone. this is contrary to anything that i can find regarding the wireless number portability policy. to make matters worse, i had a pre pay phone and i was just going to let the minutes run out, but they deactivated it and wont give me a refund, they will however put the money on a new prepay account - not.
needless to say, i have to travel out of town today and i have no cell phone in case of an emergency. to say i am unhappy with cingular is an understatement.
can anybody help me on who to contact about this?

the number that you are porting to the other carier must be active at the time of the port (meaning dont cancel the service.. the gaining carrier does that for you)... from what you are saying it sounds it was...when you initiated the port to the other carrier it does take time..anywhere from 1-48hrs... if you are having difficulties call the new provider to check your port in status... if its initated the other carrier has the number...

as a matter of procedure...yes...
they have to... when you went with another carrier and you told them I have a number with cingular and I want to activate that number with you(the other carrier)..the other carrier contacts cingular and cancells you cingular account and activated an account with them... the number cannot be active in 2 places at the same time...
it took a long time to work out the inter carrier details for this procedure..the line number portability effective date kept getting pushed back until the details worked out...
if you are still having connectivity problems your new carrier has a deprtment to handle this issue.. in ATT /Cingular the department is called PAG...porting administration group...they release you number... if your cingular phone does not work it has been released (providing you didnt cancel your cinular service yourself)... your issue is with the new carrier not Cingular
