I have read a number of posts on here about flashing the D500 ... but they all start off from the point after they have been flashed. Could someone please tell me, from the beginning how to flash the phone?

I have a USB cable connected to my phone/PC and have the EasyStudio installed, if that's of relevance.

1. Download Downloader 3.2
2. Download a firmware www.avi-stuff.de (pw:avistuffbyag)
3. Select port/speed
4. Click on START

Thats it, the rest speaks for it self.

BIN = .cla (Software that runs the phone)
TFS = .tfs (Files and folders in the phone)

Btw I don't think that the cable you have will work as it works with EasyStudio and probaly is for syncing only. But you can always try.

How do I know the COM port and appropriate spped?

I left all of the settings as they were (COM3/115200) and clicked start and I get the message:

** Wait for Connect Requesr from Mobile...
** (POWER ON the PHONE!)

If your using a USB cable you can set your speed at 921600 but if your using a Serial cable the max speed is 115200.

And if your using a USB cable that works with EasyStudio, it will not work that cable is different.

When this appears:
** Wait for Connect Requesr from Mobile...
** (POWER ON the PHONE!)
You have to "Power on the Phone"

Samsung D500 Flash Cable. This cable is needed to flash the firmware of the Samsung D500. A Brand new 9v Battery is required, as the flashing process takes around 90 min.

£14.99 from http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/datacables/samsung.htm

Must admit, that a 90 minute processing time, just to get rid of the Orange software, seems a little over the top. Perhaps someone can advise what else I can expect to gain/lose from performing a flash of my phone?

It dures 90 mins because that cable is serial and your port has a limit of 115200. But you can remove that 115200 limit on some chipsets with the HiSerial driver. http://www.rippstein.net/HiSerialEN.htm

If your Chipset isn't supported and you don't want to wait 90 mins its best to get a USB flashing cable which is much faster, flashing will only dure 6 mins.
