chiaralom,
I am sorry, the Prolific driver that I suggested earlier seems to have problem. Please download this one from Prolific again. This driver is specifically for XP and I have tried that with my cable and computer and confirmed it works. The link is:
http://tech.prolific.com.tw/visitor/fcabdl.asp?fid=31604505
After you unzip the files, note down the path of the unzipped files. Go to that directory and run the file called DRemover98ME2KXP.exe to remove any previously installed driver. After that, it will ask you to reboot the computer. After the computer reboots, it will detect new hardware and asked for driver install. Make sure you select the following when asked:
- Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
- Include this location in the search, then click browse
- select the directory for the driver files
After finish, go to Device Manager and check under Ports (COM & LPT), you should find Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3). Then the usb driver installation is successfull.
As for the Easy GPRS, after you unzip the files, go to the unzipped folder and run setup.exe and after finish, you should see an icon called EasyGPRS on the desktop. Double click the icon to run Easy GPRS. Click file and select setup. In the setup window, change the COM setting to use COM3 and the speed setting to use 230400. You can find a status bar at the bottom of Easy GPRS window. Before you change the setup, it should display offline at the center of the status bar. After you change the setup, it should display SGH-E316. If it doesn't work, try reboot the computer and re-start Easy GPRS. If it still doesn't work, it could be that you got the wrong cable.
By the way, I should ask whether your cable is a brand one or a no name one. If it is a brand one, what brand is it and do you have the model number for the cable?

Go to Device Manager and check what is under Ports (COM & LPT) and let me know.

Yes, you have to connect the cable to your computer. As for the phone, it doesn't matter until you have the Easy GPRS up and running. Don't worry, I always have the cable connected to my computer all the time without the phone. The only time I connected the phone is when I want my PC to link to my phone.
