Hi everybody,
I'm new on this forum and I don't know anything about flashing mobile phones. So please excuse me for any stupid question(s) I'll ask.
I got my D500 2 weeks ago and I'm happily using it. I think the only feature really missing is the voice dial feature. And I was quite surprised to find that a firmware update can add this nice feature to my phone.
Would somebody who has already updated his phone to answer me to the following questions:
1. Which data cable should I use? I was looking for a data cable on the market and the only one I found is an USB data cable. Is it OK?
2. Is the Downloader 3.2 flasher the software I have to use to update my firmware? How is it compatible with the usb data cable? I saw only COMxx serial ports as possible inputs in the Downloader 3.2 menus.
3. Will the warranty of my phone affected by this firmware upgrade?
4. Is the firmware upgrade erasing my photos, phone book? What type of flashing method should I use to preserve the user data?
5. Is the D500DDED4 firmware preserving all the current features of my phone? Is it a modification of the original Samsung firmware or a irmware built from scratch?
6. Any bugs noticed in the firmware D500DDED4 so far?
Hope you'll not get bored while reading my long list of questions.
Thankfully,
amo

Hi everybody,
I found the answer to some of my questions.
I guess I have to install the Samsung USB Modem Driver to map the USB to a serial port.
On the market (in Switzerland) there are two types of cables, both made by Samsung:
1. simple USB cable;
2. a package called PC Data Link (more expensive).
Does somebody know which one should I buy? What software the PC Data Link is providing? The same software I may download freely from the Samsung web site (PIM+File Manager + Sync + USB Driver) or it includes something more? The customer was not able to clarify me and nothing is written on the PC Data Link package's box.
Which flasher should I use? OptiFlash 4.12 or Downloader 3.2?
Thanks,
amo

I found more information on this site:
http://www.samsungd500.tk/
They point I need a serial Samsung D500 Flash cable (not the Data cable!).
I still don't know what cable to buy. Would somebody tell if the USB Data Cable may be used to update the firmware of my D500? Which is the difference between a data cable and a flash cable?
Cheers,
amorox

Thanks fuzzball.
Yes, it's what I read also about serial cables. But looking on the site you mentioned, the only cable I found for my D500 is:
- USB Flashing cable for Samsung D500
Anyway I'm not able to buy on the Internet. Therefore I would like to know if the type of USB cable(s) (made by Samsung) I'm finding in shops may be used to flash my phone.
Thanks,
amorox

Hi fuzzball,
Have you updated the firmware to the one posted at the beginning of this thread? Would you share your opinion about it with us? Is the new firmware working well? Is is buggy? Is the voice dial working?
Thanks,
amorox
P.S.: I saw on another thread you want to restore your original firmware. Why??

Fuzball, I found the item you were speaking about:
-http://allgsm.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=302&osCsid=abc18469d f05299629cd7e735c2b9936
Unfortunately I'm not able to buy it.
But I found in a shop a serial RS-232 PC link cable made by Samsung. It wasn't for D500 but for some E and X models. It has a strange slot instead of a 9V battery plug.
Has anybody seen something similar? Are the samsung serial cables for E and X series compatible with the one for D500? Which is the use of that slot? Is the use of a 9V battery mandatory?
Thankfully,
amorox
P.S.: I would like to hear a technical explanation showing me why it is better to use a serial cable than an USB one to flash the phone, because I don't see any real reason.

You cant use the standard USB cable made by samsung for flashing but you can mod it to flash your phone.
Only do this if your sure you have a datacable which has a rx, tx and a gnd (doesn't matter which brand):
Open the header you'll see that there are 4 cables connected to pin 2 (Green), 3 (Red), 4 (White) and 8 (Black).
You can cut the 3 (Red) one. Move 2 to 5 (Rx) and 4 to 6 (Tx).
Than cut off the usb header. Connect the Green cable to the RX, the White cable to the TX and the Black cable to the GND from the datacable which your sure of it has rx tx and gnd.
