I just thought I would let everybody know that unlocking a cell phone, especially a V3 is a federal offense that could result in jail time and up to a $10,000 fine. That is just the government's act. Cingular can then sue the person who unlocked the phone because they have a patent and copyright for the V3 icon_mad.gif

hm...thats lame...once you buy the phone then its not their property...and how does unlocking do anything to the copywrite??? Thats just their way of saying...Were thieves and wan't you only on our network...in that case screw cingular...but I don't even like the v3 so I wouldn't worry on that but still the whole unlocking thing...they have companies for it and the government hasn't shut them down yet....WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMMING TO??? YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING FREELY...!!!

Could you provide more source of this infomation . Which goverment act?
Does any one look at the contract when signed? i look at mine and maybe my english is realy bad , but i don't see any disclose about the fone is lock too Cingular or carrier. But reason we can not sue them because they have a solution and that is if you requested they will do it for a fee or at your contract is over ( one yeas or two year what ever that might be). I think the reason Tmobile is easy on this because they don't want to deal with this matter. The unlock industry out there is big it's not a small thing and i have not heard of nay of them being fine ,but more and more company develop tool to unlock fone is pop up every where. The more seriuos thing is changing IEMI# and still only UK have a gut to spend money to inforce and combatting this thing to prevent thieft from stealing your fone and used it. Oh well just an Old_Fool opinon

If this is a crime, why is Cingular charging some customers a fee to have the phone unlocked?

well the providers do give a phone at a discounted price. compare prices for the phone in open market where there are no locks. they cover the discount from your 1-2 year contracts. Ever notice the higher end phones usually have 2 year contracts.. you cannot have them with 1 year contract. I got my last phone unlocked after the contract for free. Find a authorized seller who is willing to do that ( a rare species of humans)
Another trick. Get free upgrade of phone after contract is over. Locked again for 2 years.. icon_wink.gif

I beg the differ about the 2 year contact for high-end phones. I can get any new release phones cheaper than going through Cingular stores and with one year contract rather 2.

Thats why I prefer to have my phone bought retail...I don't trust them...also if I wan't it unlocked cuz I don't like Cingular anymore and want to switch, thats exactly what I'd do. But until then the phone does me no good unlocked, so I have no intention to have it done "yet" don't get to anxious Old_Fool (HAGAN!)
