Hello-
Seems like I'm having the same problem hundreds of others have had, so please forgive the post, but I haven't found this specific question posted.
I am using Cingular GSM in Arkansas. I purchased a Motorola MPX220 on eBay. The screen on this phone shows the AT&T logo.
When I insert my SIM card, I get the PUK message, asking for an unblock code and PIN and PIN confirmation.
I called Cingular. They said that my SIM is for their "blue" side of the Cingular GSM network and that this phone is for their "orange" side of the network. They said that while I might be able to find someone who could unlock the phone, it would fry my SIM card in a matter of a few days because they're just not compatible.
My questions:
1) Does she know what she's talking about?
2) How do I prevent this in the future? I really want the MPX220 phone, but Cingular isn't selling it. eBay is really the only option. If someone is selling an "unlockeD" version, would that work, or would it be dependent on this "orange" or "blue" network compatability?
I really appreciate any help you might have....

the phone you have is registered to ATT/CINGULAR Blue your accout is registered with cingular, its like your putting AA batteries in a device thant needs AAA just wont work, now you can google "Unlock MPX220" and probbaly find hte ulock code, but then youll have to get the wap settings for cing, most likely can go to moto's web page and they will send it ota, dont call cing or moto for either the unlock or wap settings because neiter company condones the use of an unlocked phone

I don't mind doing the leg work on changing the settings -- but is there a potential harm to my SIM card as the Cingular rep explained?

your SIM itself will be ok. like Russ said though, it will be a different story if it'll work the way you want it to.

So... is it safe to by an "UNLOCKED" GSM phone from eBay or will I run into the same situation with Cingular's "blue/orange" network designations?

the only stumbling block *may* be the data side of things...some phones from other providers cant connect on the data side (look at the posts for the a630 in the motorola forum)..the voice side should work fine as long as the device (phone) is unlocked... PUK code errors can be reset easily... just dont start guessing at it... if you enter in a wrong PUK too may times it *WILL* fry the sim...if you have the enter PUK code on the scren call customer care (orange or blue as applicable) and you dont have to get into a long story about how its an unlocked phone... just say that your phone reads enter PUK code...
the error is not in the phone... the registration of the sim card didnt pass security... they will give you the override to cure the issue... this does not unlock the sim but clears the fault so you can make calls
