Is the Prolific SAM E700 USB data cable compatible with the SGH E-316 Samsung phone? If not, which cable do I need?

Unfortunately, they are not. Look for models like:
E105 / E315 / E316 / E317 / E715 / S307 / V205 / V206 / P107 / X105 / X426-X427 / D415
Their cables are compatible.

Any idea where to buy for cheap other than ebay? I would like to make sure the cable actually works and return if it doesn't. Somewhere near Vancouver... Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for your help. Before I actually buy the cable, can you tell me if the E-316 is capable of voice (MP3) ringtones? The main reason for me purchasing the data cable is to use certain songs for my ringtone.

E316 can't handle MP3 directly, you have to convert it to mmf format and there is a limitation that the duration of the songs to be less than 10 seconds. For more information on converting mp3 to mmf, you can refer to the following thread:
http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic3430-0-asc-0.html
Besides the length limitation, the sound quality of the resulting mmf ringtones will not be as good as the original mp3 song.

I got the cable now - a SAM S300/S308 which I was told would work. The cable, when pluged into the phone does wake it up! The cable is recognized as Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM4) and I've also added the Samsung GPRS MODEM (COM4). The speed for both is set up as 115200. When I open EasyGPRS, the phone stays in Offline mode. The setting in EasyGPRS are set to COM4 with 115200 as the speed. I refresh and also exit and re-open but I get nothing other than Offline. Any ideas? Do I need Rogers or myself to set something up on the phone? Thanks.

Try speed of 230400 for EasyGPRS or download the latest PIMS from Samsung:

I finally gave up and tried everything on my laptop from work. It worked first try. Took just 5 minutes and everything was up and running. I'll have to go back to the desktop at a later time and try to resolve the issue.

Glad to hear that it finally works. Check for possible virus or Adware in your desktop.
