Is it true that both cingular and t-mobile have the same coverage, reception, and network? (at least in New Jersey)

It is my understanding that T-mobile and Cingular are still different companies, although they might merge into one. Both are GSM providers, but they use separate networks.

Yes that is true. However, i went to several cell phone stores and they all said that t-mobile and cingular are the same, and if your phone doesn't work on t-mobile it won't work on cingular....however this is not true.
They may have similar (or the same) coverage areas, but they run on different networks...
A good example of this is that the t610 runs horribly on t-mobile. This is why cingular has the t616 which has tremendously better reception than the t610 (there are many reviews on this).

well at least in Oregon, the coverage is not the same, cingular does not have good coverage at all, coz they just started rolling out thier network. I hope they merge, and T-mobile adopts thier rollover idea, coz thats really cool.
well the reason why the SE T610 didnt work well with t-mobile is coz it has crappy reception, and it wouldnt work on any network well.

Cingular and Tmobile are two very different companies. both reigning in their own respects.
First, Cingular dominates (well sort of) the market here in California and most of the west coast regions, with a number of cell sites to serve as its crown. Signal wise though begs to differ... but thats another story.
TMobile on the other hand dominates on the East Coast, having a number of cell sites available and of course, a good signal (so i hear)...
Cingular and Tmobile then came up with the idea of piggybacking on each others network. Cingular gets the chance to enter and become a big player in the East coast area, using Tmobiles existing network, and likewise with Tmobile. Less expenses, more revenue, what can go wrong?
well, a number of things. first, since both of them piggyback, you can expect a plethora of problems. as if cingular didnt have enough to deal with.
The bandwidth that Cingular has is already congested. Now you have someone piggybacking on it doubles the whammy. Therefore, a number of dropped calls have been experienced not only by Tmobile, but also Cingular as well. Cant really say its the same thing around the east coast.
Wel, thats that... hope that sort of explains a number of things.
Cheers.
Oh its so nice to be back!

Tmobile and cingular were way different in RI. cingular bought out cellone, and then 3 years later tmobile bought out voicestream. cingular has always had way better service, tmobile was ok in the normal areas, but had a bunch of dead spots all over the state. tmobile had good service on the ocean drive which is pretty much a dead spot for every service, but they arent really that efficient overall in RI. they have pretty good plans though.

In NY, Cingular dominates without a doubt. T-Mobile is horrible in NY. I hear it is getting better, but it is just a rumour. I have had Nextel, Sprint, Cingular (itself), ATT, and T-Mobile. In my experiences, cingular is second best. T-Mobile is fourth best. I have gotten too many dropped calls and no reception in most areas i go with T-Mobile. Cingular was almost perfect. As of my experiences, this is how i would rank the companies listed above.
1. NEXTEL
2. CINGULAR
3. SPRINT
4. T-MOBILE
5. AT&T
I hope this is helpful

Yes, there is a network sharing arrangement between Cingular and T-Mobile. Prior to the AT&T purchase, Cingular did not have a presence in the major market of NYC, and T-Mo had no coverage in California. Think code-sharing like the airlines do, but for phone service.
As part of the purchase of AT&T, Cingular has to unwind the partnership with t-mo for the states noted above. it will take through the second half of 2006, but its happening. In the vast majority of markets, they both have independent networks, and in all markets they are compeitors.
I would be very surprised if the FCC/DOJ would allow them to merge - their spectrum ownership would be insane!
