I bought the phone from Amazon more than 2 months ago. I'm tied by the 2-yr ATT contract because I sent in the rebate form. This is what I heard from a friend a while back, I can call Cingular and request the account to be switched to their network (eventhough I think they are pretty much merged by now) and sign up for a 1-yr contract. By doing so, I'm no longer bounded by the 2-yr ATT contract and I get to choose any plan.

IS this true?

sort of.....

you can migrate and get discounted pricing on your phone when you have completed 21 of 24 months (in your case) or in the case of a 1 yr contract 11 of 12 months... that is the rules for western northeast southeast and southwest markets... those rules do not apply for Central at this time (could change at any time)

if you meet the time pre-requisite...the old contract is trashed and a new one is created and you get discount pricing...

if you do not met the time pre-requisite you can still migrate but you pay full price for the phone and the old contract is trashed and a new one is created...this option can only be done at a store... not over the phone

Thanks for the quick response. I'm currently using the $39 plan and I figured I don't need that much minutes. I think the T637 (for ATT) can be unlocked for Cingular network. If that is true, I don't need to buy a new phone. So, if I can migrate to Cingular anytime now, I will sign up a 1-yr contract and choose a $29 plan. Is this gonna work? Please kindly advise.

in you are in the west cost market and not alowed to migrate you can do the following:

go to a cingular store and say you want to add a line so you will change to a new family plan.
you will get the phone at a upgrade price.
on the 2rd day you return the line you added and you get to change your plan to cingular nation and with a new contract of 1 or 2 yrs. you only pay an upgrade price of 18$ and cause you canceld the added line on the 2nd day you dont have to pay a cancelation fee.

hope that made sence.
