well, i dunno if it's normal, but my phone does the same thing, it actually gets pretty hot around 20 minutes...kinda freaky!

ive had numerous 30+ minute convos and never noticed mine getting hot

No, you shouldn't have extreme heat where it is uncomfortable to hdld in your hand or close to your cheek. So long as the phone is not particularly damage (scuffs ok), it is under waranty and you cna bring to to a corporate store to have the battery checked (likely the culprit) or possibly other things. Definately is not normal and you want to take care of that.
Any number of phones I've had can have 30 min convo's (including LG's) without it feeling even slightly warm.
Get it checked.

Definitely a problem same thing happened few years with my old kyocera, it started getting hot during calls and charging. Few weeks later they sent battery recall saying it might catch fire if in use too long, ahh right. Same thing happened the the 7000 too but i scratched pretty bad so nothing they could do.
