Hi Captain Grumpy

Just a couple of questions if that's OK icon_wink.gif

When you say to install the cable drivers from the CD....aren't they already included in the latest PC Suite?? If I install the CD drivers then they are duplicated in the control panel/programs icon_confused.gif which I would think was superfluous lol

If I just plug in the cable w/o the phone attached then nothing happens...but with the phone attached the drivers install....well, sometimes but other times they don't. Have tried every port (all 6) on my pc, front & back.

However, from numerous horrendously frustrating calls to the nokia support line I gather that the cable saying connected to 6101 *should* appear in the device manager of My Computer...the only things are appear there (& ONLY while the phone is connected btw) are the CA-42 USB modem under "Modems" & the Nokia phone parent under "Wireless connections" icon_ermm.gif

Still stuck on the 3rd "connect phone" page of the "get connected wizard" and nothings moves when I try the PC Suite...

On instructions from the support line, I downloaded the nokia cleaner & have run it more than 6 times; uninstalled & reinstalled PC Suite numerous times.

I reckon the "Support" line is purely guessing @ this stage icon_huh.gif

I wish i wasn't so damn clueless icon_sad.gif

I also recently received a "knock-off" CA-42 cable for $5 vs $40-$50.

I struggled for awhile with the Nokia Suite Drivers then after finding this forum the "substitute" drivers and hacks etc. etc.

Finally I read about running the Prolific PL 2303 driver and voila the Nokia drivers themselves worked (a couple of other posters have mentioned this but I believe this solution gets overlooked because of the focus on getting the right drivers to work etc.)

My suggestion would be again ensure the cable is disconnected and all old drivers removed. Then go and download the Prolific PL 2303 driver. (this site is not letting me give the link for some strange reason but it has been posted somewhere earlier in this thread, or just do a search). After this has been run then plug in the cable, you will see that no exclamation occurs and the cable is now ready to embrace Nokia PC Suite.

Good Luck,

JP

Yep, same problem here,.anyway, phyically pull the broadband cable out of the usb, then your pc will connect to the phone,

Thats the trouble with too many usb ports, broadband rules! take it out then the pc will find your phone. found this out after hours of fun! icon_wink.gif

After spending all day working on this I finally got it to work. icon_w00t.gif

I couldn't even uninstall and even reinstall anything 100% and luckily I had created a WinXP restore point to the beginning.

My problem was that the PCSuite would just not connect and there was little sign of life. Also my phone would say "connecting" and 50% of the time would say "enhancement not supported" icon_sad.gif

My solution was to follow simply the recommended basic procedures mentioned earlier i.e. remove cable when installing PCSuite, etc., etc.

Even after installing PCSuite it did not show up any drivers in device manager icon_mad.gif .

I have a USB to UART driver (looks generic) that came with the CD which WinXP installed "automatically"

The key thing was in PCSuite >> Manage Connections >> select only one cable instead of the default 2 cable types. Try each one separately. I suspect that it obsesses with the other (unused) port.

It now connects via the "serial" connection.

Greetings folks, I am new to this forum, but have followed this thread for weeks, months. I, too, purchased a generic, but very authentic looking CA-42 knock-off (with instructions and CD) on eBay months ago. I'm running XP at home and am so-so at techie competance, but I get by.

I've have tried all the suggestions, the proper procedures, the proper sequence of steps; all the uninstall, reinstall, drivers, registry, you name it, etc., etc., - nothing works. The best I could get to is a device not connected on my monitor, and the usual depressing "enhancement" messages from my Nokia 6102i. If I paid myself $1/hour for my efforts, I'd be broke by now.

I finally uninstalled everything that I could find. I bought the real thing from Nokia (about $40). I downloaded the latest version of PC-Suite from the Nokia website (drivers for XP are included). I installed per instructions. It worked perfectly, first try, no glitches.

With everything working properly for several days and many connections, I then tried using the knock-off cable with the installed and properly working software - nothing. Didn't work. Nothing I did could make it work. I pulled the knock-off cable, plugged in the Nokia cable, everything worked perfectly.

Folks, I don't know what to tell you, but there is something different between the knock-off cables and the Nokia cables. It simply cannot be the same wire, or wires, or wiring, or connections, or something.

I have no further answers or suggestions. The Nokia cable sets up easily and works. It isn't worth your time or effort to continue beating your heads against this problem. Bite the bullet, get the Nokia cable, get on with your life.

By the way, having successfully downloaded my images to my computer, I can honesty tell you that the 6102i camera sucks big time - and this entire effort probably wasn't worth it at all. But it was a helluva learning experience although I'm not sure what the lesson was.

Best wishes, mzmz

Ok, I got my ca-42 cable installed and I have it working. I'm using a generic cable bought off eBay. I had trouble getting the PC suite program to connect with my 6102i in the beginning. Then I went into the ca-42 driver files and just right click on the files with .inf extensions. I then click install and the .inf files updated the windows register. There are 5 .inf files. Once that happened, the PC suite recognized my phone.

Also, I find that I need to connect the cable to my phone, start the PC suite program and then connect the other end of the cable to the usb port.

Could you be more specific as to where you right clicked the .inf files ?

Thanks

When you right click, you get a screen with several options. Just the install option on each inf file. The most inportant thing to remember is to attach the cable to the phone leave the other end unattached. You then start up the PS Suite program and click get connected. Once you get to the screen that the program is sensing for a connection you then attach the usb end to the PC. Wait a few seconds and the program will sense the phone connection and will indicate your phone model.
