long time reader, 1st time poster.
i'm also having the same problems....
i got my phone couple of days ago and just got the data cable with the box in the middle. i installed the driver and the PIM from the cd and i connect the phone to the cable to the computer, i hear a sound from the phone and the computer. but when i open the PIM, it says offline. i downloaded the prolific driver "wd-pl-2303h_hx_x_v20026.zip
PL-2303 USB to Serial Certified Logo Driver for Windows XP " and i don't know where to put it, its sitting in my desktop. please somebody help, i just want to transfer some music to my phone.

Just wondering, did you use the usb driver from Samsung website or another driver such as Prolific or others? How you get yours working? Is it just a driver issue?
basically. if you use the USB cable (not serial) you WILL need a driver that bridges the USB connection to something that the computer can recognise. (in this case the driver turns it into a modem <--- if you go to device manager > modems > the samsumg thing will be there.
ALSO once you install the bridging driver com 3/4 will appear in easystudio 2 under 'setup' so you can select it, as opposed to in the past where it was completely blank!
Enjoy. Ill upload and post a link to it.
USB Driver. for those of you with USB plugs for your D500 and have no 'port' selection in easystudio v2.0

SUMMARY OF HOW I GOT MINE TO WORK
OK lets get started with what i HAVE:
*WINXP Pro SP1
*EasyStudio v2.0 (can be got from samsungmobile.co.uk)
*USB Cable
My USB cable has NO BOX in the middle, just a USB connector and D500 connector
*USB Driver From Samsung website (http://uk.samsungmobile.com/mobile_phone/manual.jsp?model_name=SGH-D5 00)
*PL2303 USB driver (get it quick from here: http://www.mobiledia.com/cgi-bin/redirect.cgi?http://s29.yousendit.com /e.aspx?id=09VQZIM9LZRJN39UE10FHIFW7C)
1) plug USB cable in USB port, With phone turned on also connected in cable
2) install USB driver from SAMSUNG WEBSITE v1.0 i believe
3) install PL2303 USB driver wtih phone still on and plugged in.
4) NOW take data cable out of phone, and reconnect it...windows should do a bit of crap and install it as a modem.
5) install easystuido v2.0
6) in ES v2.0 go to file > setup > pick com3/4 what ever is there.
7) press reload and it should load up all your sim data.
If you want Java games etc i highly recommend this straight forward guide: (http://www.mobile-review.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=24750)
NOTE: im refering to the guide. you have to press #*5737425# ONLY once (per phone restart) to indicate PPP>USB, BUT you have to press #*5737425# EACH time you upload every individual java applet. I find half of them dont work as they are not compatible with the phone.

THANKS!! IT WORKS!! I can finally transfer stuff.
But I still don't have the USB-to-serial bridge. So I still can't flash new firmware.
I'll wait for my new cable.
I still can't upload java though. When I see the jack-in-the-box my phone just reboots.. :{.
