I'm not certain if both the BT and standard GSM network connections are made using the same stub antenna, but couldn't you basically put the V551 phone in an "airplane mode" (no transmit or receive) by simply temporarily removing the stub antenna? Convincing the flight attendant that you're not on the network and can't possibly transmit or receive in a fashion that could be a hazard to aircraft systems may be a different issue.
I tried on my last flight to find the network setttings and someone disable them or set them to something else so that I couldn't connect, but I couldn't figure it out. Has anyone ever tried this?

Why would you want to do this with a v551 ?
Oh, appreciate you not testing your theory on any flight I'm on

wow interesting thought! it is true that if you remove the antenna pretty much you can not be on the network! it just wont work! however i doubt the flight crews are going to approve of this! but hey im up for the first time for everything theory! the only thing i could say for the network settings is to perhaps
(if in U.S.) put the phone on the euro networks!

Turn off the phone. Way put other lives including yours in jepordy if there was a malfunction with the airplane's eletronic systems. Besides, you will probably end up losing the stubby antenna once removed, than you will not have a working phone PERIOD
